He kicked off his solo career in 1983 and has since then released eight phenomenal albums, and won many awards including three Grammy Awards. He has also recorded music with Whitesnake, Public Image Ltd, Alcatrazz and David lee Roth. He was part of the G3 Concert Tour, which started in 1995. In 1999, he founded Favored Nations, a recording label for artists who have achieved epic mastery over their musical instruments.
Steve Vai began playing the guitar at a young age, enamored by the music of Led Zeppelin, particularly by Jimmy Page’s beautiful solos. By the age of thirteen, he was playing the guitar and then learning from the iconic Joe Satriani. He also joined a number of local bands, founding one called The Steve Vais. He was inspired then by the music of guitarists such as Glen Buxton, Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Allan Holdsworth and Jeff Beck. He then went on study at the Berklee College of Music. He mailed Frank Zappa a drum instrumental transcription as well as a tape of him playing the guitar. Frank Zappa was so amazed that he hired him as a music transcriptionist to work on a number of guitar solos, which were then heard on albums such as Shut Up ‘n’ Play Yer Guitar and Joe’s Garage. By then, many were buying cheap Steve Vai tickets for his concerts.
He then went on to do overdubs on a number of guitar songs for Frank Zappa’s albums, joining his band as a full member in 1980. He amazed Frank Zappa, who dubbed him the little Italian virtuoso. He went on to describe his guitar playing skills as playing impossible guitar parts and stunt guitar. In 1993, he was the Zappa’s Universe album’s featured artist. He then moved to California and recorded his debut album, released in 1984 as Flex-Able. He became Alcatrazz’s lead guitarist after Yngwie Malmsteen left, recording albums with Graham Bonnet. In 1985, he performed with Public Image Ltd on their album.
In 1985, he rose to even more fame when he joined David Lee Roth, of Van Halen fame, in his supergroup. As a member of The David Lee Roth Band, he was its lead guitarist, alongside musicians such as Billy Sheehan and Gregg Bissonette. The band’s first album, dubbed Eat’em and Smile, ranked fourth on the Billboard 200 charts and sold more than two million copies in a short amount of time. His performance on the album was so magnificent that Rolling Stone magazine compared it to that of Eddie Van Halen, particularly commenting on the way David Lee Roth’s style blended with his. The album is still regarded as one of the greatest albums in rock music. The David Lee Roth Band’s next album was released in 1988 and ranked sixth on the Billboard 200 chart, selling millions of copies.
In 1989, he joined Whitesnake as a guitarist, taking place left by Vivian Campbell and also went on to play guitar for Alice Cooper. He then joined the G3 series of rock music tours, performing with the likes of his teacher Joe Satriani and Billy Sheehan. He went on to release chart topping albums, with some of his solos ranked on Guitar World’s 100 Greatest Guitar Solos of all time. He has written and recorded music with Ozzy Osbourne and has won a number of Grammy Awards for his music. A guitar virtuoso, his live concerts are very entertaining and thus Steve Vai tickets sell fast.
