The Steep Canyon Rangers are an American outfit that sing music from the bluegrass genre. This awesome American band comes from Brevard in the state of North Carolina and is a popular band in the world of bluegrass. At present, The Steep Canyon Rangers sport a lineup that includes Woody Platt who plays the guitar and is the band’s lead vocalist, Graham Sharp who plays the banjo and is the harmony vocalist, Mike Guggino who plays the mandolin and is the harmony vocalist, Charles R. Humphrey III who plays bass and sings the occassional harmony vocals and lastly, Nicky Sanders the fiddler who, like most of the band except for the lead vocalist, sings harmony vocals. The year of 2009 saw this amazing bluegrass group release their solo record, Deep In The Shade, which charted high on the charts and ranked in the top ten of the Billboard Bluegrass charts for around eighteen weeks.
This was followed by the record, Rare Bird Alert, released with Steve Martin which ranked first instantly on the Billboard Bluegrass Chart and also ranked high on the Billboard 200 charts. This band’s first album, Old Dreams and New Dreams, was released in 2001 and was followed by Mr. Taylor’s New Home in 2002. In 2004, The Steep Canyon Rangers released their self titled album followed by One Dime at a Time in 2005. 2007 saw the band release the album Lovin’ Pretty Women with 2009 seeing the release of the popular Deep in the Shade. The band’s latest album in 2011’s Rare Bird Alert, a collaboration with Steve Martin.
Steve Martin first began playing with The Steep Canyon Rangers in 2009. This was during the band’s performance on the live radio variety show, A Prairie Home Companion. The artist and the band got together well with both going on tour rogerther in the US in 2009 and again in 2010. Steve Martin has played with this amazing band during their performance as part of the Hardly Strictly Blugrass festival, at Carnegie Hall and at the Benaroya Hall. He then went on to perform with the band in one of UK’s most popular music shows, Later with Jools Holland. In 2010, Steve Martin was seen performing with The Steep Canyon Rangers as part of the Bonnaroo Music Festival. This duo of band and artist has also performed a concert upon the West Lawn of the fabled Capitol Building in the US to mark the Capitol Fourth celebrations in 20111. Their latest collaboration is the album Rare Bird Alert, released in 2011 and an instant hit in the Billboard charts. This album features guest artists such as the Dixie Chicks and Paul McCartney.
