Background and Initial Years
Born into a military family in Dallas, Texas in 1945, Stephen Stills got infatuated with the blues and folk rock at a tender age. Impatient to have a career in music, Stills left the Louisiana State University and moved to New York to test his luck. The ambitious Stills initially had a stint with the Au Go Go music group but the band called it quits after releasing just a single album. In 1966 Stills relocated to California and formed the Buffalo Springfield with Richie Furay and Neil Young. The trio successfully released three albums and even managed to give a hit track “For What it’s Worth”, before breaking up in 1968.
Beginning of CSNY
The singer still hadn’t achieved the commercial success he had been yearning for and was desperately looking for a breakthrough. He luckily bumped into David Crosby and Graham Nash, both of whom were already working with different bands. The trio embarked on the journey to release an eponymous album alongside their solo careers, and was surprised by the exceptional reviews the album garnered. Its song “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes” was a commercial chartbuster and the three members decided to do more together. Neil was later inducted and the group came to be known as the iconic Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. The four-piece has given singles that became runway successes and had back to back number one albums “Déjà vu” and “Four Way Street”
One of the most enduring folk musicians, Stephen Stills was encouraged to pursue a career of his own after the commercial success of CSNY. The singer released his self-titled debut solo album with guest vocals and music from popular musicians in the industry and gave a best-seller single “Love The One You’re With”. A sophomore record followed the next year and there was no stopping this gifted artist after both went Gold. The singer released a string of solo albums, six of which hit the Billboard 200. During the later years of his career Stills was diagnosed with prostate cancer but recovered quickly after a major surgery, followed by his first ever solo tour of Europe.
