The all-time favorite Stephen Marley began singing and dancing at his father’s concerts when he was as young as 6. The blessed musician even sang “Sugar Pie” at the Jamaica World Music Festival when he was just 8 years old. His inborn talent drove him to the point where he, together with his older siblings, formed the family band Melody Makers. Their father Bob Marley himself wrote the band’s debut single “Children Playing in the Streets” which earned the quartet considerable fame among the audience. Initial responses to the band’s musical endeavors were modest but the troupe finally had a mainstream breakthrough with its pop and rock infused reggae album “Conscious Party”. On the road to success, Melody Makers snagged the Grammy Award for “Best Reggae Recording” the same year.
Already an expert singer and songwriter, Marley embarked on a solo career in 2005 with his debut album “Got Music?” The album went largely unnoticed until Marley made a spectacular comeback with his “Mind Control” two years later. The album smashed the pop and hip-hop graphs after topping the reggae charts and winning a Grammy. The album is a raw depiction of Marley’s emotions and association with music as Marley humbly explains, “My joy and pain, this is me”. The artist’s first ever solo feat features a host of emotions expressing anguish over the helplessness of modern day man on one hand and reciting delightful hip-hop tracks on the other.
Revelation: Root and Fruit
Marley’s follow-up project was conceived as having two parts, starting with the Grammy Award winning “Revelation Part 1: The Root of Life”. The artist got his motivation for the project while he was skimming through an article that highlighted the decline of reggae music. Determined to preserve his roots, Marley immediately set to work on the album. The release took the world by storm and Marley shifted his attention to the second part titled “Revelation Part 2: The Fruit of Life”. In an interview with the Rolling Stones Marley responded, “The root is there, and we’re looking at the leaves and the branches and the stem and different veins and all these things”. It was clear that the album was not pure reggae but a mixture of other genres like dubstep, hip-hop and EDM.
