Steely Dan: Going Against the Tide
In 1972, guitarist and bassist Walter Becker teamed up with vocalist and keyboard player Donald Fagen to establish Steely Dan. For the next decade, the band enjoyed lots of critical and commercial success before disbanding in 1981. The group’s fusion of traditional pop, rock, R&B and jazz was an instant hit with the public.
Moreover, Steely Dan’s unique lyrics laced with irony and mystique set them apart. Despite not doing much musically during the 1980s, the band still enjoyed a cult following. They reunited in 1993 and took their game to another level. Rolling Stone labeled the New York natives as the “ideal musical antiheroes for the 1970s.”
Steely Dan released their debut album Can’t Buy a Thrill in 1972. It entered the top 20 on the US Billboard 200 and was eventually certified Platinum by the RIAA. The following year, Becker and Fagen released Countdown to Ecstasy. It earned a Gold certification from the RIAA.
The duo would go to release five more albums before parting ways in 1981. All of these were certified either Platinum or multi-Platinum. After their comeback in 1993, Steely Dan performed on many tours. You can also catch them in action during their latest one by getting Steely Dan Philadelphia tickets.
In 2000, the band released Two Against Nature. It earned them their first Grammy for “Album of the Year.” The Rock & Roll Hall of Famers have sold over 40 million albums around the world. You can enjoy the greatest hits from these records by locking in your tickets early. Get them now.
