Steely Dan’s Early Years
Steely Dan is a New York-based band formed in 1972. The jazz rock band was founded by musicians Donald Fagen and Walter Becker who became acquainted in 1968 when Fagen heard Becker performing in a café in New York. After completing their studies, the aspiring performers relocated to Brooklyn and recorded a few demos in 1971. They started performing gigs but to their dismay had little success. Their luck changed when they were approached by an ABC Records’ associate, Gary Katz. With this, Steely Dan released its debut full-length album in the same year. Named ‘Can’t Buy a Thrill’ the platinum certified album reached 4th place in Canada and 17th place in the US.
