St. Paul and The Broken Bones was formed in Birmingham, Alabama, in 2011. This incredibly close knit group features eight band members including vocalist Paul Janeway, as well as Jesse Phillips (bassist), Andrew Lee (percussion and drums), Allen Branstetter (trumpet), Browan Lollar (guitarit and back up vocalist), Al Gamble (keys), Chad Fisher (trombone), and Jason Mingledorff (woodwinds).
Soul is Not Dead
The band’s name is drawn from the fact that the lead singer is often nicknamed ‘St Paul’, which alludes to his connection with the church. Having been raised in a non-denominational local church with Pentecostal leanings, gospel and soul were a regular fixture in Paul’s life. When he finally decided to pursue music, it came as no surprise that his music contained influences from his early life.
Once St. Paul and The Broken Bones was formed, it didn’t take long for this band to peak the interests of fans and music critics alike. Their live shows were a tour de force and featured a variety of different sounds and elements which made for unforgettable shows. Lead singer Paul Janeway is also known for his incredible stage presence and his stage moves, likened to those of James Brown, have earned him quite a reputation.
Initially, they self-released their first EP, Greetings from St. Paul and The Broken Bones, and promoted themselves while playing live shows. They would then go on to sign with Single Lock Records. Once St. Paul and The Broken Bones were officially signed onto a record label, they released their first full length studio album entitled Half the City in 2014. The album reached the number 56 spot on the Billboard 200 chart and was widely praised by a number of music critics. It was mentioned in the likes of NPR, Southern Living, Paste Magazine, Rolling Stone, and Garden and Gun as an album that should be listened to.
The band’s exposure also increased exponentially when they had their national television debut on CBS This Morning. Their success was proving that soulful music still had a dedicated fan following.
An Evolution of Sound
By the time the band was ready to release their second EP, their sound was evolving. What had initially begun as a six piece band had expanded to eight. They also had a larger fan following and had played extensively internationally.
Sea of Noise was released in 2016 and featured different instruments as well as a more socially aware and conscientious tone. The album was released via RECORDS, which is a new record label founded by Barry Weiss and SONGS Music Publishing.
An Extensive Touring Schedule
One sure shot way to get your music out there and to expand your fan following is by touring. St Paul and the Broken Bones have over the course of their short career toured very extensively. In addition to touring across the continent and internationally, they have also opened for bigger acts and have played at festivals. In 2015, they opened for The Rolling Stones on their Zip Code tour stop in Atlanta, Georgia, as well as Buffalo, New York. They also played at the Glastonbury Festival in 2016 and performed their hit song “All I Ever Wonder”.
