This talented group of musicians was brought together in 1974 by songwriter and saxophonist Jay Beckenstein. Although the band’s line-up has seen many changes over the years, however the quality of music produced by the band has not been affected. The current line-up comprises of co-founder Jay Beckenstein playing the saxophone, pianist Tom Schuman, Julio Fernandez on guitars, Scott Ambush on bass and Lee Pearson on drums and percussion. Together they make Spyro Gyra one of the best jazz bands of today.
Moreover, not only does the band play jazz fusion but it blends together R&B, funk, smooth jazz and sometimes pop music to produce a terrific new sound. It all started when Jay was in high school along with keyboardist Jeremy Wall. The two formed the band but later parted ways for college; however, they continued playing during summers at outdoor concerts.
While in college in Buffalo, Jay played along various groups at clubs as the backing vocalist. Wall joined him after graduating and the two resumed the band again within a year. According to Wall, their music was a "gutbucket of rhythmic tradition. We did simple music and esoteric stuff. It all came together, this oddball mix, until we found a middle ground, our own groove". The band kept playing and gained more exposure by playing at more sites around Buffalo. More members joined the band but Wall left in 1978 to never return to the group. The others carried on without him and released their debut self-titled album which found a place on Billboard’s Top 40 Jazz Albums of 1978. The group then released album after album and kept reaching newer heights of success and popularity with each one of them.
Spyro Gyra has received 12 Grammy Award nominations up till now. The first nomination was in 1980 for the "Best Jazz Fusion Performance" for ‘Catching The Sun’ and the second and third in 1982 for "Best Rhythm and Blues Instrumental Performance" for ‘Stripes’ and "Best Jazz Fusion Performance" for ‘Incognito’. Similar nominations followed in 1983, 1984, 1985, 2007, 2008, 2009 and in 2010 for different categories on popular songs by the band such as ‘City Kids’, ‘Access All Areas’, ‘Shakedown’, ‘Alternating All Currents’, ‘Down The Wire’, ‘A Night Before Christmas’, ‘Wrapped in a Dream’ and ‘Good to Go-Go’.
Apart from that, Spyro Gyra bagged the ‘George Benson Lifetime Achievement Award’ in 2007 at the Canadian Smooth Jazz Awards. This is an honor few bands are bestowed with and Spyro Gyra is one of those lucky few. Also, many of their albums have received Gold and Platinum certifications and have sold millions of copies out in the market.
