Spiritualized is the brainchild of Jason Pierce, one of the founding members of another rock group Spacemen 3. Jason and Peter Kember were the ones who founded Spacemen 3 in 1982, a group that developed quite a cult support due to their musical exploits. As that decade came to a close, Peter and Jason had an argument and the later along with drummer Jonny Mattock, guitarist Mark Refoy and bassist Will Carruthers went to start their own group which was named Spiritualized. The name itself was taken from a text that was written on the back of a Pernod bottle. As the band was borne out of Spacemen 3, a technical legal glitch meant they had to work under their previous label Dedicated Records.
Spiritualized debut came with the release of the song Anyway That You Want Me in the year 1990. The song was the cover of the cover of the album of the same name by another England based rock band The Troggs. A year down the line from the release of the track, Spacemen 3 officially split up and all previous contractual obligations were settled. Spiritualized went on to release a string of EP’s like Smile/Sway, Run/I Want You and Feel So Sad but their full fledged debut came with the release of the album Lazer Guided Melodies in 1992. The album got a lot of critical acclaim especially for the fact it had typical Jason written all over it. The band with a new look and new members apart from Jason of course released Spiritualized’s second album titled Pure Phase in 1995. This album was a bit different from the previous one and included deeper, denser remixes based on a continuous guitaring phase that is so prominent during the entire album.
Spiritualized came out with the epic Ladies and Gentlemen We are Floating in Space in 1997 which turned out to an absolute rage. The album had Gospel, blues and Jazz thrown in for good measure along side the music that was the band’s hallmark. The result was a more diverse, cultured and appealing creation that became an instant hit as soon as it hit the music stores. It made a dash for the top spots o various charts as fans and critics both raved about it. To put the icing on the cake NME voted it Album of the Year, after beating stiff competition from Urban Hymns by Verve and OK Computer by Radiohead. Around one hundred and twenty different musicians featured on the band’s next album Let It Come Down which came out in 2001. It is more orchestral in its orchestration than the normal Spiritualized albums which made it another critical success.
Amazing Grace, Songs in A&E and Sweet Heart Sweet Light followed to take Spiritualized music in another dimension. These albums show the full repertoire of the music Jason is capable of making. Not only that these creations also go to highlight that Jason and his band are not afraid to crossover to other genre to experiment. Spiritualized music has been like a breath of fresh air because every record is different from the other which makes their music all the more unique and appealing. The constant experimenting and not sticking to one specific format has enabled them to cater to a much bigger audience.
