Sparks is an American rock and pop band which was formed in 1971. Hailing from Los Angeles, the band consists of two brothers, Ron Mael and Russell Mael. Formed in 1968, Halfnelson was a rock band which stayed active just for three years. After the overwhelming response drawn by Two Hands One Mouth tour, Sparks is ready to kick off their The Revenge of Two Hands One Mouth tour this fall. With this tour, the band will be visiting a number of cities in Europe and the US. So, hurry up and get the Sparks tickets to catch your favorite rock duo live on stage in your city.
Since its formation, the band’s lineup hasn’t changed. Ron plays keyboard while Russell Mael is on vocals. Best known as a quirky band with unconventional approach to songwriting, Sparks is one-of-a-kind band whose genre-defying music will stir your soul. Delighting their audiences since the 70s, the multiple decades of live performances and tours has won them many fans as well as the respect and attention of other big names in the world of music. Today, it is a mainstream band that has pioneered in a number of different genres such as synthpop, proto punk, glam rock, mainstream pop, power pop and recently chamber pop.
With an ever-changing style, Sparks has created their own musical universe that is unique in every aspect. From the very start, the Mael brothers knew that music was their future. Brought up in the thriving metropolis and influenced by the club scene in Los Angeles, they formed their first band in late 60s and were instantly signed up to a label. When they first started, they were inspired by bands such as The Beach Boys, The Doors and Love and The Standells. The popular British bands which heavily influenced their music included Pink Floyd, The Kinks and The Boys.
The electronic dance music adopted by the Sparks in the 70s was a major hit in US and enjoyed mainstream success during the 80s. The band debuted in 1971 with the release of its self-titled album which was the re-issued version of Halfnelson. In 1972, their second studio album "A Woofer in Tweeter’s Clothing" came out and was led by a UK tour. One night, during a performance at the Marquee, Queen opened for Sparks. This event coupled with their many appearances in London helped them secure a cult like following in Europe.
During a BBC show named Old Grey Whistle Test, Bob Harris referred to Sparks as a cross between The Monkees and Mothers of Invention. While finding fame in UK was easy, it took many years before Sparks could find a place among the US audience. With the release of the chart-topping single "Cool Places," the band started getting considerable response from the US audience and eventually it had a large number of loyal fans.
In 2002, the band released "Lil’ Beethoven" which is the nineteenth album by Sparks. The band was met with commercial success and renewed critical success with their recent albums including "Hello Young Lovers," "Exotic Creatures of The Deep" and "The Seduction of Ingmar Bergman." Sparks has released a total of twenty two albums. The band’s extensive touring is yet another amazing fact. Starting from the small tour of UK in 1971, Sparks has been touring UK, US and countries like Japan and Australia relentlessly. They have also performed live with many other artists like Christi Haydon.
It’s the sharp yet intelligent lyrics and their idiosyncratic stage presence accompanied by the famous falsetto voice of Russell that makes Sparks stand out in the league of their own.
