The story itself is based upon memoirs written by Maria von Trapp and released under the name of The Story of the Trapp Family Singers. Most of the songs found in this spectacular musical have turned into hit singles and become legendary in that they have been turned into ‘standards’. Some of the famous songs include The Sound of Music, My Favorite Things, Edelweiss, Do-Re-Mi and Climb Ev'ry Mountain. The first production of this musical on Broadway occurred back in 1959 and contained as its cast Theodore Bikel and Mary Martin. Since its launch, it has been produced many times and revived a lot.

This musical was turned into a 1965 hit movie of the same name that went on to bag five different Oscars. This musical is also famous in that it was the last musical written by both Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, with both collectively known as Rodgers and Hammerstein. The inspiration behind the musical came through the movie The Trapp Family released in Germany and based on the memoirs of Maria von Trapp. This movie also had a sequel titled as The Trapp Family in America. When director Vincent J. Donehue saw these two movies, he initiated work on the musical.

The Sound of Music was first thought of as a play but soon turned into a sing a long sort of musical. For the musical, some of the aspects of the von Trapp story were slightly changed, such as where the family lived. The story itself is real and factual, an accounting by Maria von Trapp, a governess who was hired to teach the children of Captain Georg Ludwig von Trapp during the second world war, that became quite famous when she published her story in the form of a memoir. Thus, the musical features Maria von Trapp and the entire von Trapp family as well as other characters in a setting that is fun, exciting as well as educative and emotional.

The story begins with Maria von Trapp, known as Maria Rainer, a nun at an Austrian abbey just before the outbreak of the second world war. This nun is singing songs in the abbey where she grew up. The Mother Abess then decides to send Maria off to become a governess to the children of Captain Georg von Trapp, a retired widower. Thus, Maria sets out to become the governess to these seven children. She reaches the von Trapp home and meets the captain as well as his children. The captain has brought up his children like soldiers but Maria does not like this and so begins to reach out to the children through music. She starts teaching them how to sing and play music. Thus begins the story of Maria and the seven von Trapp children in a unique setting at one of the worst times the world has seen.

It is a sensational accounting of life before, during and after the second world war. It is a story about a family, about children and about how to people meet each other, fall in love and then eventually marry. This musical has been produced many times at many different places by different people. It has been reviewed favorably by the media and received a good number of awards. It has everything from nuns to captains to children and a sensational governess. It features some of the best costumes as well as music that has become legendary. It sports a cast that is made up of the best actors and actresses in the theatrical world and has even been turned into a five time Academy Award winning movie.
