Music seems to come effortlessly to the Knowles family. A Star at Sixteen
Only 30 years of age and Solange Knowles is already an accomplished artist, actress and model. Growing up in the shadows of her elder sister Beyoncé, Solange always wanted to become an artist. While growing up, she had several temporary stints in Destiny’s Child. Later, she signed up with Matthew Knowles’ record company and released her debut album at the age of 16.
Solange’s debut album Solo Star was released in 2002 and got three out of five stars from Allmusic. A 16-track album, Solo Star debuted at No.49 on the Billboard 200. Some of the hit singles from the album were Feelin’ You and Crush.
A bit of Acting, a bit of Writing
After releasing her debut album, Solange did not release another album until 2008. During the hiatus, she concentrated on her acting career and when she was not acting, she wrote songs for her sister and former Destiny’s Child band members.
Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams
Solange may have released her second album after six long years, but it was worth the wait. Released in 2008, the album debuted at No.9 on Billboard 200 and garnered positive reviews. This album was different from her debut album. While Solo Star was a pop album, Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams was inspired by Motown Sound of the 60s and the 70s. In addition, the album also incorporated elements of electronic music and downbeat.
While the album debuted at No.9 on Billboard 200, three of its singles debuted at No.1 on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart - I Decided, Sandcastle Disco and T.O.N.Y. In addition to being a commercially successful album in the US, the album also did phenomenally well in the UK.
A Seat at the Table
Solange Knowles third and latest album A Seat at the Table was released in 2016. Solange’s most commercially successful album to date, the album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. This is Solange’s first No.1 album on Billboard 200. The album also won Solange her first Grammy nomination and then an award for Cranes in the Sky. While writing for the Rolling Stone magazine, Maura Johnston had this to say it takes sonic cues from dusty soul sides while sounding as timely as a freshly sent tweet.
Solange is no Beyoncé –Doesn’t Need to Be
While she is inadvertently compared to her elder sister, Solange insists that she and her sister have different musical aspirations.
Solange in her own words is inspired by The Supremes and other Motown girl groups. However, her biggest music influence remains her mother, Tina Knowles, who was once a member of the The Veltones. A well-read and travelled Solange’s biggest passion however remains writing songs. Her earlier song writing was heavily inspired by Paul Verlaine, a French poet.
