Snow Patrol was founded by three Dundee University friends in the year 1994. The initial lineup consisted of singer and guitarist Gary Lightbody, drummer Michael Morrison and bassist McClelland. After two years Morrison left and was replaced by Jonny Quinn. The band currently consists of Gary, Jonny with Nathan Connolly on lead guitar, Paul Wilson on bass, Johnny McDaid on rhythm guitar and Tom Simpson on samplers and keyboards. During the years Snow Patrol has been signed with different labels like Jeepster, Electric Honey and Fiction Interscope Records. Snow Patrol mainly plays music in genres like power pop, alternative rock, Britpop and indie rock. They have collaborated with different bands and artists like The Cake Sale, Belle & Sebastian, Shrug, The Reindeer Section and Lain Archer.
The band’s debut album was Songs for Polar Bears that came out in 1998, this was lauded by the critics but failed to get the attention of the music fans. The second album When it’s All Over We Still Have to Clear Up again was not a huge success, fans didn’t praise it but the album did won the attention of critics. Final Straw was the third album that was released by Snow Patrol through a new recording label called Black Lion which was in turn a secondary label working under Polydor Records. One track from Final Straw namely “Run” entered the charts for the first time and raced to the #3 position instantly, it also received an award at the Ivor Novelle Awards for Best Album. This came as an encouragement for Snow Patrol and they released yet another good album in the year 2006 by the name of Eyes Open, one single from this album “Chasing Cars” received immense popularity and was featured in a scene of the famous TV series Grey’s Anatomy. The very same year Snow Patrol performed “Chasing Cars” on the British program Top of the Pops. In 2007 this single earned a Grammy nomination in the category of Best Rock Song. Snow Patrol also composed a track for the soundtrack of the movie Spiderman 3 called “Signal Fire”.
Since the year 2008 Snow Patrol has released three more studio albums namely A Hundred Million Suns (2008), Up to Now (2009) and Fallen Empires (2011). After releasing A Hundred Million Suns Snow Patrol went on an extensive tour of UK and Ireland. Soon after this they had a chance to go and perform live in South Africa and the same year they opened for other popular bands like Cold Play and U2. The music of Snow Patrol has been appreciated by a number of popular artists like Nikki Six (of the heavy metal band Motley Crue), Bono (of U2) and Michael Stipe of (R.E.M). in the year 2005 and 2007 Snow Patrol was nominated for a total of six BRIT Awards in a number of categories like Best British Group, Best British Rock Act, Best British Album and Best British Song.
