Smoking Popes are known as the creators of a unique kind of music which is the fusion of punk and rock laced with their crooning voice. Some listeners describe it as ‘hyper-kinetic tear jerker’.

Hailing from the suburbs of northwest Chicago, Illinois, Smoking Popes is an all American rock band. Formed in 1991, the band comprises of the three talented siblings; Josh Caterer, Eli Caterer and Matt Caterer.  They are popular for mixing raw songs about poignant heartache with elevated melodies, sensational harmonies and punk spirit. They enjoy strong relationship with their die-hard fans and fellow musicians. They play in the genres of rock, indie rock and punk.

Smoking Popes burst on the music scene in 1991. The Caterer brothers grew up listening to the tunes of rock & roll and great singers such as Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett. They became interested in music very early in their lives. Matt got himself a guitar in 1980, while Josh acquired bass and El got his drum set. They started jamming with their respective musical instruments. They became fans of the punk music and the first punk band Ramones. Other inspirations include Tom Waits, The Smiths, Dinosaur Jr, The Cars, Liberace, Mel Tormes, The Replacements, AC/ DC and many other rock bands of that era. They performed for the first time in 1990 at a party and played 10 punk styled songs of their favorite bands. At that time, they called themselves Speed Stick. Later they changed it to Smoking Popes.

They released their five tracks in 1991 and performed as much as possible in the vicinity of Chicago and sometimes Indiana.  Doors of success opened for the band when punk icon Ben Weasel of the band Screeching Weasel became their fan. He used his influence and encouraged Mass Giorgini of Squirtgun to produce the band’s first LP, “Get Fired”. Later they played the music of the movie “Clueless” and recorded many hit songs. In 1999, they disbanded due to Josh Caterer’s turning to Christianity and the differences among the brothers. In 2005, much to the relief of their fans they reunited again.

Smoking Popes have released several albums and hit songs. Their first album “Get fired” jumpstarted their music career in a fantastic way. In 1995, they released their second album “Born to Quit” which is their landmark album. It earned them a huge fan following and appreciation. They gained recognition in the music world while touring with other popular bands. In 1997, they released another album “Destination Failure” which challenged the idea of what punk music should be like. They disbanded in 1999 at the peak of their music career and thankfully decided to reunite in 2005. They performed at many venues at that time and gained popularity once again. In 2008, their album “Stay Down” was released and another album “It’s been a long day” was released in 2010. Their latest album “This is only a Test” is their first concept album. It delivers the band’s signature music; punk energy with heart-on-your-sleeves attitude. They will be touring all over America to promote the album. The songs of this album are written from the perspective of a teenage boy. It explores the teen world of identity, love, musical aspirations and teenage suicide.
