Robinson joined The Miracles back when it originally started off by the name of the Five Chimes in 1955. he sang alongside the group up until 1972, after which he decided to let go of the group in order to direct his focus towards his role of Motown’s Vice President. But with love of music in his blood, Robinson couldn’t stay away from the music industry for long, and a year later he made his comeback as a solo musician. As a solo musician, he spawned hit singles like Cruisin’, Baby That’s Backatcha’, Just to See Her, The Agony and the Ecstasy and Quiet Storm. Smokey Robinson was also inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall Fame in 1987. The following year Motown Records sold out, and he left Motown for good in 1990. Early in his career as a musician, Robinson struggled financially and was stared down by difficulties in getting a record deal. But later on, he along with Berry Gordy, decided to form up their own record label. So they did, and Tamla Records was created. Tamla Records was later turned in to Motown Records, and the Miracles signed up to the label as its first act. The group recorded and released its first single, Shop Around, in 1960 and it went on to be a massive hit. The popularity of the single grew so much that it went on to become their first single that sold more than a million copies. From there onward, the group started enjoying mainstream popularity and with Robinson as the group’s lead singer, The Miracles went on to release a total of twenty six top forty singles during the time between 1960 and 1970. Some of those hit singles include Tears of a Clown, The Tracks of My Tears, Baby Baby Don’t Cry, You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me, and (Come Around Here) I’m the One You Need. Later in 1965 the name of the group was changed to Smokey Robinson & the Miracles. Apart from being a hit R&B singer of that time, Robinson also went on to be one of the most famous songwriters of that time as well. As a song writer, he penned several hit singles including Don’t Mess With Bill, You Beat Me to the Punch, The Way You Do the Things You Do, and My Baby Must Be a Magician. After giving his last performance with the group in July 1972, Robinson decided to retire as a musician for some time and direct his focus more towards raising his family and his role as the Vice President of Motown Records. But he couldn’t stay away from the music industry for long as only a year after his retirement, he announced his comeback as a solo musician with the release of his album titled Smokey, in 1973. The album contained Smokey’s hit balled Baby Come Close and also a Miracles tribute song Sweet Harmony. His debut solo album met with mixed to positive reviews. Soon after his comeback, Smokey Robinson tickets were up on sale once again as he started performing live as well. As a solo musician, Robinson made a breakthrough with his third studio release, A Quiet Storm¸ which produced three hit singles. By far Robinson has release a number of hit singles and albums as a solo musician. He also keeps on touring from time to time for his loyal fans.
