Prior to forming Smash Mouth, Steve Harwell was a part of a rap group. Once the members were decided for this new band, they recorded a demo song titled ‘Nervous in the Alley’ which was played on radio. Luck was with them that day and Smash Mouth earned a deal with Interscope Records. The band’s debut album titled ‘Fush Yu Mang’ was released in 1997 which went double platinum soon after. ‘Walking on the Sun’ was the most popular song of the album with ‘The Fronz’ receiving respectable attention.
Smash Mouth began work on their second album titled ‘Astro Lounge’ in 1999 and released it the same year. This album was not influenced by ska genre and was the first time the band showed interest in pop music. The album was still a huge success even with the change of sound. Their song ‘All Star’ has been featured in many movies and was certified triple Platinum.
Some of the songs that the band recorded early in their career were compiled into an album called ‘The East Bay Sessions’ which came out in 1999. The same year Mitch Marine replaced Kevin Coleman on drums. Marine went on tour with the band and after the tour he was replaced by Michael Urbano. Smash Mouth covered ‘I’m a Believer’, a song by The Monkees, in 2001 which was featured in the movie ‘Shrek’. They released the album ‘Smash Mouth’ the same year which went Gold.
‘Get the Picture’ was released two years later which contained hit songs ‘Hang On’, ‘You Are My Number One’ and ‘Always Gets Her Way’. They covered Sherman Brothers, ‘I Wanna Be Like You’ for The Jungle Book 2. After the band was dropped by Interscope Records, they signed a deal with Universal Records and released the ‘All Star Smash Hits’ in 2005, another compilation album. A Christmas album was released in 2005 titled ‘Gift of Rock’. Smash Mouth covered various Christmas songs and included some of their original tracks as well. Smash Mouth released their fifth studio album ‘Summer Girl’ in 2006 and few of its songs were featured in movies.
Soon after the release of their fifth album, the band saw a lot of lineup changes. Urbano was replaced by Jason Sutter. Leroy Miller replaced Greg Camp as the guitarist in 2008 but Camp returned in 2009. Camp was permanently replaced by Mike Krompass after he left again. The band had to see another member leave, this time it was Marine and Randy Cooke took his place on drums. They signed with 429 Records after their deal with Universal Records ended.
With 429 Records, Smash Mouth released ‘Magic’ in 2012. It reached number 22 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart. After the release of the album, the band went on a series of tours and Smash Mouth concert tickets were in huge demand during this time.
