Founded in the year 1990 in California, United States, Sleep have gained a large amount of popularity due to their unique style. Their music is based on the genres of stoner metal and doom metal and their sound is extremely fresh and and unique. The current members of the band include Jason Roeder on the drums, Matt Pike on the guitar, and Al Cisneros on the vocals and bass guitar. Their past members include Justin Marler on the guitar and Chris Hakius on the drums. They are described as the ultimate stoner rock band by famous critic Eduardo Rivadavia. The band had a considerable impact on the heavy metal music of the 90s.
Sleep released their first album in the year 1991 under the name of Volume One. The group was often compared to the likes of Saint Vitus during their early years and soon developed a large fan following. Shortly after the release of their debut album, Justin Marler departed from the group and became a monk. The group released an EP the same year with the recording label Off the Disk Records. The EP was named Volume Two EP. They soon started recording their second full length studio album, which they sent as a demo to a popular independent recording company called Earache. The company liked their work and offered them a contract, which the group signed. The label then released their album exactly the way it had been sent to them.
In the year 1992, Sleep released another album. This was named Sleep's Holy Mountain. It went on to become a great hit, spawning various popular songs. Soon afterwards, the band was offered a recording contract with London Records. They took the offer and started to work on their next record. The album was issued in the year 1995 and was titled Dopesmoker. However, it wasn't so much an album as a one hour long single song. Due to this, the label turned it down and did not release it. The band then set to work again, and created another record. It was named Jerusalem. However, this too got rejected by London Records.
Due to the rejection, the band broke up. However, Sleep reunited in May of the year 2009 in the United Kingdom, giving a mind blowing performance at a music festival called All Tomorrow's Parties. Ever since then, they have been working tirelessly to produce outstanding music for their fans. They have also been performing at numerous places all over the world. They gave several performances at the Holy Mountain in Monticello, New York, where they performed at the ATP New York 2010 festival. After this, the band went on an extensive tour of the country, performing at various places all over the United States. They headlined several festivals and dates and gained a lot of fan following.
