Formed in Olympia, Washington in 1994, Sleater Kinney is one of the leading rock grrrl and punk bands in the US. The all-female lineup includes Carrie Brownstein on guitar and vocals, Corin Tucker on vocals and guitar and Janet Weiss on drums. The band’s lineup has remained the same since they first started performing in 1994.
Sleater Kinney was formed at a time when the rock grrrl movement was at its peak and their inspirations include popular punk acts such as Bikini Kill, Excuse 17 and Heavens to Betsy. The movement speaks vocally about feminism and rights for all genders and sexual orientations. Being a part of this movement, the band has always been very vocal about their opinions and their music sends out a strong message to their listeners.
The band was formed by the three original members when they had been performing with other bands. They used to meet up at gigs and decided to start working together on a separate project. When their original bands retired, they decided to give their new project a go. Their first album called “Sleater Kinney” was recorded in one night when the band was on a trip to Australia. The release of this album in early 1994 was met with favorable critical reviews and the band was soon recognized as a force to be reckoned with in the indie rock scene.
This became a trend for Sleater Kinney. Their next six albums, released till 2006, were all loved by the critics. Even though they tried varied musical styles and gave different messages in their albums, each album was universally acclaimed by the music critics. None of their albums have received an aggregate score of less than 8 out of 10. This is a very big achievement for any musician.
Even though they were critically very successful, Sleater Kinney decided to disband in 2006. No official reason for this hiatus was ever given though some fans suggest that the low record sales led to this decision. There seemed to be no animosity between the band members as they continued to work together while the band was on hiatus and worked on a number of solo projects with each other. Even though Sleater Kinney was very popular with critics and was always busy with live performances, they were absent from the music scene for almost 8 years.
To the joy of their fans, Sleater Kinney announced they are re-forming in 2014 and did so with the release of a brand new album. The album titled “No cities to love” was released in January 2015 to much critical acclaim. This was also their first album to hit the charts and it appeared in the top ten in various charts. The album also topped the Heatseekers chart at the number one position.
Sleater Kinney is a band that has never stuck to one genre. While they have their roots in indie rock and punk music, their musical output is a mixture of many genres. Their lyrical themes vary from personal songs about heartbreak to anthems about social change and issues.
