Sia’s hometown is in the city of Adelaide in Australia. Both her parents were artists; her father was a musician in many Australian bands such as Mount Lofty Rangers and Fat Time whereas her mother was a vocalist for one of these bands as well as playing together with Sia’s father in the band, The Soda Jerks. She is also the nice of renowned artist, Colin Hay, of the famous band, Men at Work, and has also been part of the band as a guitarist. Sia counts amongst her influences the likes of Sting, Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder with her music as good as theirs.
Sia graduated from her hometown’s high school, the Adelaide High School. She first began playing music in the 90s by playing music within the booming jazz scene in Adelaide when she was seventeen years old. She was first part of the local funk jazz band, Crisp. She acted as the band’s vocalist with the other members playing guitar and drummer. This band first released two different albums Deal in 1996 followed by 1997’s Delerium. In 1997, Sia started her solo career by releasing her first album as a solo artist, OnlySee, from within her garage. This garage album sold around a thousand copies in Adelaide only despite being an independent, crude release from a garage.
Within a few years, by 2000, Sia was signed on by the record label, Dance Pool, a label owned by Sony Music. With this Sony Music label, Sia released her first major studio album and her second release, Healing is Difficult, an album that contained music a fusion of jazz and R&B. it contained the hit singles, Drink to Get Drunk, Taken for Granted and Little Man. The single, Taken for Granted, was a top ten hit in the UK and very popular in the club scene. Soon after, Sia changed labels and was signed on to Go! Beat Records, a UMG company. In the APRA Awards held in 2002, she won an award as the Breakthrough Songwriter.
The next Sia album was an EP released in 2003 and titled as Don’t Bring Me Down, with its main song being part of the soundtrack of the 36 Quai des Orfèvres. The album Colour the Small One was released in 2004 to much acclaim with its many songs played on radio and popular in the club scene. From her work on this album, Sia was compared with artists like Dido and she even collaborated on a song with famous American artist, Beck, on the single The Bully. Two of its singles, Where I Belong and Breathe Me, were part of the hit movie, Spider Man 2 in its renowned soundtrack. Another song by Sia, the phenomenal Breathe Me, was part of the famous HBO series, Six Feet Under as well as part of the fabled fashion show, Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, in 2006. Sia has also gone on tour in the US extensively and also appeared on other shows and tours as a headliner or with other artists and bands. Apart from her highly successful stint as a solo artist, Sia is also vocalist to the well known band, Zero 7, particularly on the band’s first three albums. Two of such songs, The Garden and When It Falls were top five hits in the UK with the hit single Simple Things topping the UK Albums chart. Two more of its singles topped in the US.
Sia’s this album was released in 2008 and it was titled as Some People Have Real Problems. It contained the hit singles Day Too Soon, The Girl You Lost to Cocaine, Buttons and Little Black Sandals. She also wrote the sensational track, Bound to You, for the movie Burlesque, a song that received a Golden Globe Award nomination as the Best Original Song. Her latest album is the highly successful We Are Born released in 2010. Sia gave her fans a pleasant surprise by releasing her first holiday album, ‘Everyday is Christmas’ on November 17, 2017. The record has generated buzz all over the globe and has collected positive reviews from publications like ABC News and AllMusic. It features ten songs on the track-list out of which she has churned out Santa’s Coming for Us.
‘Everyday is Christmas’ is the follow-up to her platinum selling record ‘This is Acting’ which came out in 2016. The album peaked at the fourth spot on the Billboard 200.
Sia Plots First Stadium Tour of Australia and New Zealand
Sia, the eight time Grammy nominated pop superstar has recently added another leg to her, ‘Nostalgic for the Present Tour’ and it is scheduled to begin this fall. She has announced three stadium shows so far. Two of those will be performed with Charli XCX, Amy Shark and MØ at Melbourne’s AAMI Park and Sydney’s Allianz Stadium on November 30th and December 2nd respectively.
