A Little Background

Shovels and Rope consists of Carry Ann Hearst and Michael Trent. Hearst was born in Mississippi but grew up in the Music City. She had to leave Nashville to attend the College of Charleston and it was during those days that she decided to perform on her own. Hearst began to perform in bars and venues around the city and once she had graduated, she hit the road for tours and also joined different bands to broaden her exposure.

She met Trent in the year 2002 in Charleston. Trent was from Denver but had moved to Charleston. The two of them clicked and began to tour together. Even though they were spending plenty of time together, they were still working on their own projects. Hearst came out with an album "Dust and Bones" in the year 2006 and Trent followed suit by releasing his own self-titled album the next year.

Some things are Just Meant to Be

Hearst and Trent released an album titled "Shovels & Rope" under their own names because they did not want to become a permanent act yet. The two tied the knot in 2009 but continued to perform and record on their own. That resulted in Hearst coming out with a studio album "Lions and Lambs" in the year 2011 a year after her husband had released "The Winner."

It was at the end of the year 2010 however when the two had started to work on "The Ballad of Shovels and Rope," a documentary about their time working together as a team. The plan was to complete it in three months but it did not finish until September of 2013. During that time, in 2012, they decided to start a joint venture, Shovels & Rope that released the album "O' Be Joyful" which peaked at the one hundred and twenty third spot on the US Billboard 200.

Their television debut came on January 30, 2013, when the duo appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman. In September, Shovels & Rope won the "Emerging Artist of the Year" gong at the Americana Music Honors & Awards ceremony. They also won the award for the "Song of the Year" for their track Birmingham.

"The Ballads of Shovels and Rope" made its debut at the famous Cleveland International Film Festival in the year 2014 and it won the Ground Zero Tennessee Spirit Award for the "Best Feature" at the Nashville Film Festival. At the Port Townsend Film Festival, the documentary won the award for the "Best Feature Documentary."

Subsequent Years

Shovels and Rope released their next album "Swimmin' Time" in August of 2014 and it went on to peak at the twentieth spot on the Billboard 200. That was followed by "Jukebox Vol. 1," a cover album in November of 2015. Their next studio album was titled "Little Seeds" and it came out in October of 2016, which was followed by "Jukebox Vol. 2" in December of next year.

Now Shovels and Rope are all set and ready to go on the road once again. They are out to show what makes them such a special act. If you want to experience the power of their music live, then book your Shovels and Rope tickets at the earliest.
