Shen Yun Symphony Orchestra operates under the banner of Shen Yun Performing Arts that was previously known as the Divine Performing Arts. Based in New York, the company has dedicated itself to promoting Chinese performing arts in form of ethnic and classical dance performances, story driven dance performances, as well as solo performances. Apart from the tradition Chinese dancing acts, the company also sheds limelight on traditional Chinese music, and that is where Shen Yun Symphony Orchestra comes in.
The formation of Shen Yun goes all the way back to 2006 when the company was formed with the mission of rejuvenating and celebrating more than 5000 years old culture of China. All the performers at the company practice a spiritual discipline called the Falun Gong, and the Falun Gong Associations organized the performances in different parts of the world.
The company comprises of three performing art companies. One of them is the house company that is based in New York, the other one is the touring company and then there’s an International Company. More than two hundred performers in total are a part of all these three companies. The touring company of the Shen Yun Performing Arts tours around the globe during seven out of twelve months a year. While on its international tour, the company performs at 130 different cities in North America, Oceania, Europe and Asia. Over the years, the company has performed at various prestigious venues as well including Le Palais de Congres in Paris, Kennedy Center in Washington DC, Royal Festival Hall in London, and Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York. Even though the company hasn’t performed in Hong Kong or China as of yet, but it has performed in Taiwan. The company is headquartered in Orange County, New York and that is where the staff and performers of the company are trained.
Each year, the original productions that the company creates are about 2.5 hours long that are further broken down in to twenty pieces. Each of these pieces showcases different styles of ethnic and classical Chinese dance, operatic performances as well as solo performances of different musicians. Before the commencement of each of the twenty acts, a MC introduces the upcoming act in both regional and Chinese languages.
Shen Yun Symphony Orchestra made its debut at the prestigious Carnegie Hall in October 2012. The performance featured three conductors leading over ninety musicians from different parts of the world to showcase some of the most classical and celebrated works. The performances also had Shen Yun’s tenors and sopranos, and laid forward the reenactment of Shen Yun’s famous original works. This year, the orchestra is expected to hit the Carnegie Hall once again, with several performances in other venues as well.
