Born in 1957, Sheila Escovedo, more popularly known as Sheila E is from California. Her father, Pete Escovedo was a professional percussionist and still performs with the singer occasionally. Sheila was born into a family that had its roots set deeply in the music industry. Her godfather was Tito Puente, a professional salsa and Latin jazz musician who has been active for over fifty years now. Sheila’s uncle, Alejandro Escovedo is also a songwriter, singer who has released over fourteen studio albums and collaborated with artists such as The Sensitive Boys, Rank and File and The Nuns. Three other uncles, Javier Escovedo, Mario Escovedo and Coke Escovedo have worked in bands namely The Zeros, the Dragons and Santana respectively. Sheila is also Nicole Richie’s biological aunt, who was adopted by the iconic singer Lionel Richie when she was only three.
Sheila E started performing with artists such as Marvin Gaye, George Duke, Diana Ross, Herbie Hancock and Lionel Richie, when she was just in her teens. She also recorded her debut track with Alphonso Johnson in 1976. The song was titled "Yesterday’s Dream". During a concert performance in 1978, Sheila was approached by Prince who watched her perform and promised her, that one day he would record with her. It was in 1984 that Sheila was invited by Prince to work with him on his album "Purple Rain". Sheila provided vocals for songs "Erotic City" and "Let’s Go Crazy". As a solo artist, she came up with several singles in the same year that made it to the US Billboard Hot 100. Her songs "The Belle of St. Mark" which landed on the 34th spot and "The Glamorous Life" which reached the seventh place brought her the fame she was aiming for. These songs were featured on Sheila’s debut studio album "The Glamorous Life" that was released in 1984 via Warner Bros. Records.
After the release of Prince’s album "Purple Rain", the singer was invited to perform as an opening act on the Purple Rain Tour. During the tour the artist briefly got romantically involved with Prince. Sheila E’s sophomore studio release came out in the following year and reached number twelve on the Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums. Another album release followed in 1986 that was self-titled. This was the last album that was produced by the artist during the eighties. During this time, Sheila was also seen working in movies such as "Krush Groove", "Sign "O" the Times", "Chasing Papi" and "The Adventures of Ford Fairlane".
To date Sheila has released six studio albums and is currently signed to Concord Records. A few of her most popular singles include "A Love Bizarre", "Sex Cymbal", "Cry Baby", "Glorious Train", "Hold Me" and "The Glamorous Life". The track "The Glamorous Life" received nominations for a Grammy Award and an American Music Award in 1985.
