For anyone who loves music, Shakira is a music artist with a distinctive class whose name started making waves in the music world of Latin America in the early 1990s. Her gifted vocals along with her charismatic looks are sufficient to keep you spellbound. The Colombian music artist has command over singing, songwriting and dancing besides producing records as well. Born in Barranquilla, Colombia, she began showing promise in music with live performances in school. Shakira was brought up in Colombia and when she was just four years old, wrote a poem "La Rosa De Cristal" ("The Crystal Rose"). She entered a deal with Sony Music and recorded her first debut album "Magia" at the age of 13 years old in 1990. Shakira's lucky break came in February 1993 when she was asked to deliver a performance at Chile's Vina del Mar International Song Festival, which was her first venture outside Colombia. The event promoted the Latin American singers where they aspired to prove their talent with a panel of judges selecting the winner. Shakira secured the trophy for third place by performing the ballad "Eres" ("You Are"). Singer Ricky Martin also served as one of the judges who declared her the winner being just 20-years old at that time.

Shakira released her second album "Peligro" in 1993 but though it fared better than "Magia" but it failed to achieve commercial success as well. She then left the music path to devote time to her high school studies. In the meantime she acted in the Colombian TV Series "The Oasis" which drew on the Armero tragedy (1985). The star released her first English album in October 2001 which contained the single "Whenever, Wherever" ("Suerte" in Spanish countries) with heavy influence from Andean music that became an international success. "Pies Descalzos" and "Donde Estan Los Ladrones?" were her Spanish albums that concentrated on Latin rock and folk music. Pop Latino and pop rock formed the themes of her later works like her cross-over English album "Laundry Service" and her later works. Dance music and electropop are the influencers for her 2009 album "She Wolf".

Shakira resorted to launch her own brand of music when her first two albums did not do well with local producers becoming commercial flops. "Pies Descalzos", released in 1995 by her, made her very popular in Spain and Latin America. This was followed by her critically acclaimed album "Donde Estan los Ladrones?" released in 1998. The artist has earned a big fan-base since then in semi-Hispanophone countries apart from numerous non-Spanish-speaking countries especially with a high following in the United States. It was her music video, "Whenever, Wherever" however which seized the English-speaking world by storm in 2001 together with the release of the album "Laundry Service" that managed sales of 13 million units internationally.

Shakira proceeded with greater confidence and released two mega-successful albums "Fijacion Oral Vol. 1" and "Oral Fixation Vol. 2" in 2005. A song "Hips Don't Lie" in particular became very popular being reckoned as the most winning song in the 21st century to date. Her latest album is "She Wolf" that was released internationally in October-November 2009. The artist has been the recipient of two Grammy Awards, twelve Billboard Latin Music Awards and seven Latin Grammy Awards besides being nominated for a Golden Globe.
