Seattle Symphony Schedule 2017-18

It was on the 29th of December in 1903, when this splendid orchestra gave its first ever live performance. At the inaugural presentation of the orchestra, Harry West was the conductor of the show. In 1911, the orchestra was given a new name of Seattle Philharmonic Orchestra. Then in 1919, the entire orchestra was restructured with the inclusion of new bylaws and was given its present name. Due to some financial issues, during the season of 1921 till 1922, the orchestra had to be cancelled.

After the orchestra was cancelled in 1921-1922, another orchestra known as the Seattle Civic Symphony Orchestra which was successfully conducted by the then acclaimed conductor, Mary Davenport Engberg began the operations of the orchestra and started to host many various performances during the time of the five year hiatus that followed. One of the principle reasons why this new operating orchestra gained popularity was due to the fact that the family affiliation of Engberg with the Symphony had been a change of many ensuing embellishments. A few of these have come directly from the organization of the Symphony. Mary Davenport Engberg also happened to be the first female conductor of the orchestra. At that time she was not just the first but also the only female conductor in the entire country. In 1921, the Seattle Civic Symphony as well as the Seattle Symphony came in a legal merger. Mary Davenport Engberg’s son, Paul was a part of the new merged orchestra group and he played the cello. However, various other accounts of the history of the Symphony narrate the fact that Engberg was never a director of the orchestra. It was in 1926 that the orchestra emerged from its financial problems and once again flourished under the brilliant direction of Karl Krueger.

There was an announcement in the media in June in 2012, that the Seattle Symphony had appointed Ludovic Morlot effectively as the orchestra’s 15th director for music. Since then till now, the highly talented Ludovic Morlot is the music director for the 2011 and 2012 season of the orchestra too with a legal contract of working for the Symphony for six years. The combined operational budget of this magnanimous orchestra for the season of 2011 till 2012 has been estimated to be $24 million. It has been noted that more than 315,000 people come to attend the performances of this fantastic orchestra every year. The live shows of the orchestra are always sold out events.
