Seal is one of the most popular figures in the music industry who appeared on the scene in 1990 when he teamed up with the producer, Adamski for his breakthrough song, Killer. Seal released his latest record, ‘7’ in 2015 which performed well on the charts and was certified gold in France. Turning an opportunity into gold
Olusegun Adeola Akabri Samuel or better known by his stage name as Seal was born to the proud parents, Adebisi Ogundeji and Francis Samuel in England. When he graduated with an agricultural degree, he took multiple jobs around London, including designing leather clothing and electrical engineering. Seal soon decided to pursue his true passion of singing and started to perform in local bars and clubs. He then became a part of an English funk group, Push in 1987 with whom he toured Japan. While in Thailand, he joined a blues band and later travelled to India on his own.
Once he returned to England, fate intervened in the form of a meeting with the house and techno producer, Adamski for whom he recorded a song, Killer. It became a monstrous hit in the United Kingdom and earned him an Ivor Novello Award. Seal soon signed with ZTT Records through which he released his eponymous debut record which went double platinum in the UK and reached the first spot on the UK Albums chart. It got the artist a Brit Award in 1992 for the ‘Best British Album’ and received four and a half stars out of five from AllMusic. Out of record’s five singles, Crazy reached number one position in many countries and was certified silver in the UK.
Seal and Human Being
After the success of his first album, Seal reunited with Trevor Horn who produced his second self-titled record which was released in 1994. It got great reception from the critics as Rolling Stone gave it four stars out of five. It topped the UK Albums chart and went four times platinum in the United States. The record was supported by six singles out of which, Kiss from a Rose was certified gold in France, United Kingdom and the United States. The song was also featured in the popular film, ‘Batman Forever.’ It also got them three Grammy Awards for the ‘Record of the Year,’ the ‘Song of the Year’ and the ‘Best Male Pop Vocal Performance’ in 1996.
Four years later, Seal put out his third studio record, ‘Human Being’ through Warner Bros. Record as a tribute to late rappers, Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls. The album received mixed reviews from the critics and was certified silver and gold in the UK and US respectively. It included a song, Lost My Faith which was used in the closing credits of the 1999 film, ‘Entrapment’ starring Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta-Jones.
Reaching the top
After taking a five year break from recording, Seal returned with bang with his new record, ‘Seal IV’ in 2003 which put him back in the Top Ten of the U.K album chart. It also reached the third spot on the Billboard 200. It sold more than one million copies worldwide and went gold in both the United States and the United Kingdom. He kept on going in the right direction and went on to release five studio albums more out of which, ‘Soul’ went platinum in the UK, Canada and Switzerland whereas diamond in France. It produced five singles and received four stars out of five from Allmusic.
In addition to studio records, Seal has also come out with two live, two compilation and four video albums so far.
