Screeching Weasel has been into punk rock music ever since their inception. After attending a Ramones concert, the lead vocalist Ben Weasel and guitarist John Jughead got the inspiration to start a band of their own. The duo hired Steve Dubick as the drummer and in less than a year the band was out with its self-titled debut album. Some of the genres commonly found in their compositions consist of hardcore punk, punk rock and pop punk. Besides Ramones, some of the musicians who have influenced them include, The Dickies, Black Flag, Zero Boys and D.O.A. As Weasel suffered from anxiety, many of his songs revolve around mental problems. Other pop and punk bands of the industry such as Green Day, The All-American Rejects, Less Than Jake, Blink 182 and Rise Against cite Screeching Weasel as an influence. Blink 182 has also covered the band’s song "The Girl Next Door" on their album, Buddha. Bassist, Mike Dirnt of Green Day is a former member of the Screeching Weasel. Many independent punk bands of the current scene such as The Leftovers, The Unlovables and The Apers also look up to their work as a great source of inspiration.

In a review, the well-known internet publication Allmusic stated "My Brain Hurts has a poppier, more mature sound rather than the teen angst-ridden thrash-pop these guys were known for on their previous two records." The critics also seemed more than happy with some of the amazing songs from the album such as "I Can’t See Clearly," "Guest List" and Kamala’s Too Nice." Screeching Weasel’s 12th and the most recent album is First World Manifesto. Mike Kennerty of The All American Rejects has produced the album.
