Schoolboy Q spent three years composing music for the mixtape underground community and merged bud smoker’s anthems with socially conscious numbers. He began his career formally in 2011 with the first mixtape, ‘Schoolboy turned Hustla.’ This caught the attention of Top Dawg Entertainment that signed the artist and released his record ‘Setbacks’ in 2011. The album featured guest appearances by artists such as Jay Rock, Kendrick Lamar and BJ the Chicago Kid. It also received positive reviews from the critics. The mixtape made it to the Billboard 200. This encouraged Schoolboy Q to work harder for his next album.

The sophomore release, ‘Habits and Contradictions’ released in 2012 and instantly grew popular because of songs like How We Feeling, My Hommie and Blessed. One of the famous New York Magazines, Complex named it to be the fifth best album of the year and the ninth best hip hop album in the past five years. A famous hip hop website, Allhiphop praised the album for Schoolboy Q’s aggressive rapping style. Songs like Raymond 1960 sound like something out of a horror movie. Other than this, the single, Nightmare on Figg St followed the same horror theme and went on to become the biggest hit of 2013. The artist always provides an eclectic and energetic listening experience.

Schoolboy Q has just released his third studio album, ‘Oxymoron’. Consisting of collaborations with well known artists like Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock, ASAP and 2 Chainz and handled by high profile producers, the album reached the US Billboard Hot 100. Songs like Man of the Year, Yay Yay and Collard Greens highlighted the album and it witnessed 139,000 sales in United States in the first week of release.

Apart from the promotional tours, Schoolboy Q has also graced a number of festivals. The list includes events like ‘BET Hiphop Awards’, ‘BET Experience Music Festival’ and ‘The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.’ The artist is influenced by The Notorious Big, Jay Z, 50 Cent and 2Pac. His rhyme style is specifically inspired by Jay Z, who ensures to adopt a different rapping technique for different singles. In addition to this, Schoolboy Q claims that the aggression found in his music is borrowed particularly from 50 Cents. On the whole, he tries to take the positives from the music styles of famous hip hop artists and merges them to come up with his own signature style.
