After the first "Texas Agricultural Fair" was successfully conducted in 1854, San Antonio became a new ground and hub for stock shows. However, the place lacked basic facilities and infrastructure to accommodate the growing need of the exhibitions. "Joe Freeman" saw the need for proper channel and facilities to boost the agriculture industry. In 1940, Freeman began the movement towards integrating youth and agriculture industry by dreaming to build a dedicated arena to provide livestock exhibition for the Texas’ youth. After numerous hurdles, Freeman managed to gather volunteers varying from athletes, businessmen, and students to gain support. Finally, in 1948 after gathering funds and support the construction of the multi-purpose facility began. The building opened to the public as "Joe and Harry Freeman Coliseum" and managed to host the groundbreaking event, the first San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo in 1950. The show hosted a quarter of million people, setting a record opening. The success of the show turned it into one of the most attended livestock show of the country every year.
In 1984, the "SALE Scholarship Fund" opened new doors for students pursuing agricultural studies to gain advantage of agricultural funds released by "SALE" Executive Committee. "Joe Freeman," "Mary West" and "Harry Freeman" were inducted into the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo "Hall of Fame" that was formed in 1999. After over almost half a century, the San Antonio Stock Show moved to a new location in 2003 at a newly built state of the art building, the "AT&T Center," previously called the "SBC Center." The new facility offered outstanding and superior resources and amenities with six thousand more seats as compared to the previous location. The Freeman Coliseum began catering to commercial vendors and their products that could be purchased by rodeo fans and audiences.
PRCA awarded the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo with the "Large Indoor Rodeo of the Year" title in 2005, and inducted the show into the Hall of Fame in 2008 for its work over the years in promoting agriculture and education as well as promoting the development of Texas.
