Sam Sparro is an Australian singer and songwriter. He belongs to a family strongly linked with music. His father, Chris Falson, besides being a gospel minister, is a recording artist and has written music for popular films like Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and Star Trek. His brother is a professional guitarist. His mother is a Baptist church’s organ player. So singing was a decided route for Sparro as he used to provide background vocals during the concerts and for the music releases of his father.His family moved to Los Angeles when his father signed with a recording label. Sam Sparro was ten at that time. Once in the US, his father used to take him to a church which was also visited by the McCrarys. Chaka Khan heard Sparro sing and admired his talent. However, before Sparro took up singing as a serious career option, he went back to Australia to live with his grandparents and work in a public relations company. Then he went to the UK and spent some time being part of the music scene there. He came back to LA in 2002 and began writing songs.
Sparro’s real name is Samuel Frankland Falson. He adopted Sam Sparro as his stage name which was inspired by Sammy Sparrow, mascot of the Dagenham radio. He signed with Island Records, a British recording company. He released his first single in 2007. It was titled “Cottonmouth”. However, the song which launched into mainstream music was one of his earlier creations called “Black and Gold” which he wrote in collaboration with Jesse Rogg, his producer. The song clinched the number two position on UK Singles Chart and number four position on Australian charts. It has been certified gold in Australia. His debut album was self-titled. It was released in April 2008. It peaked at number five on the UK Albums Chart. The album has since sold more than a hundred thousand copies and has received gold certification from the British Phonographic Industry (BPI). Other popular songs of the album include “Pocket” and “21st Century Life”.
 
Since the release of the album, Sam Sparro has come up with two more extended plays besides Black and Gold in 2007. One called London Festival ‘08 was released in July 2008. The second EP titled Pink Cloud was mostly instrumental. It released in December 2010. Other than these, he has featured in songs like “Feelings Gone” by Basement Jaxx in 2009, “Souls of Fire” by Chauffeur, and done a collaboration with rapper DMC and DJ Mason. The collaboration is a song called “Corrected” which was released in March 2010.
 
Within a few years, Sam Sparro has garnered accolades from audiences as well as critics. His immense talent has been recognized by several awarding bodies. ARIA Music Awards 2008 nominated him for five awards in the categories of “Best Male Artist”, “  Best Pop Release”,  “Breakthrough Artist – Album” “Breakthrough Artist – Single (Black and Gold)” and  “Single of the Year (Black and Gold)”. He won all five of them. In 2009, he won a GLAAD Media Award for “Outstanding Music Artist”. That same year, he also received a Grammy Award nomination in the category of “Best Dance Recording” for his song “Black and Gold”.  
 
Considering his performance so far, there is no doubt that his upcoming album is something to be looked forward to. It is titled Return To Paradise and is expected to be released in the Spring of 2012. Sam Sparro on his website has announced it to be based on 1980s and 1970s music of Funk and Soul. The release will be followed by tours of the USA and Australia.
