Russell Brand rose to fame in 2004 in the UK when he starred in Big Brother’s Big Mouth, a Big Brother spin-off series. He landed his first role in a major movie in 2007 when he played a part in St Trinian’s, released in 2007. His next big movie was Forgetting Sarah Marshall which made him a household name with American audiences. Following up to this, he starred in the movie Get Him to the Greek in 2010 and was also a voice actor in the hit animated movies released the same year, DespicableMe. In 2011, he was a voice actor for the animated movie Hop and starred in the movie Arthur released in 2011, a remake of the 1981 movie of the same name by Dudley Moore. He is widely known all over the world for his comedy, his eccentricity and the many controversies surrounding him that have become a part of his daily life.
Russell Brand is also a TV show host, having been the host of The Russell Brand Show on BBC alongwith Jonathan Ross. This was a show that was very popular with British audiences and reflects upon much of his experiences from his childhood. He was raised by his mother and had an isolated and lonely childhood. His mother suffered from cancer when he was eight years old and he went to stay with his relatives while his mother was being treated of cancer. At the age of fourteen, he suffered from bulimia nervosa. He then went on to study at the Grays School Media Arts College where he played the role of Fat Sam in a production of Bugsy Malone at the age of fifteen in a school production which would then inspire him to pursue a career as an actor. He then went on to study at the ItaliaContiAcademy in 1991 and also worked as an extra at the same time.
Russell Brand’s first roles were in The Bill, a police drama and in Mud, a children’s show. In 1995, he was accepted into the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and Drama Centre located in London. After leaving the academy, he began working as a comedian and started writing material alongside Karl Theobald. His first major live performance as a standup comedian occurred at the Hackney Empire New Act of the Year in 2000 during the final performance. This performance drew the attention of an agent and he then went on to debut at the Edinburgh Fringe as one of three comedians on Pablo Diablo’s Cryptic Triptych with Shappi Khorsandi and Mark Felgate. In 2004, he started his first one man show, Better Now and performed it at the Edinburgh Festival. In 2005, he was back at the Edinburgh Festival this time performing his show, Eroticised Humour. In 2006, he started his first UK tour titled as Shame and released a DVD on this tour titled as Russell Brand: Live.
In 2006, Russell Brand performed at the Secret Policeman’s Ball and then in 2007, performed and hosted the charity event Teenage Cancer Trust gigs alongside Noel Fielding. He has also performed for Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip at the Royal Variety Performance in 2007. He has been a presenter on MTV, Channel 4, UK Play and BBC. He has hosted many award ceremonies including those of MTV, won many awards include three British Comedy Awards and is set to play a role in the movie Rock of Ages, an adaptation of the hit eighties musical.
