Begging for a change & a new dimension, music gave birth to its flashy yet immensely popular offspring, electronic dance music, in the early 80s. Playing with turntables & synthesizers serves up brand new avenues with every flick of the finger, & the genre’s fame has seen many sub-genres develop. Whispering slowly in the bowels of student nightclubs & tricked out hatchbacks in the early 2000s, dubstep has emerged as a major deviant from the established electronic dance musical arrangement. And, as its leading exponent Rusko puts it, it is the punk rock of the electronic genre.
The West Yorkshire man established an early love for dubstep after studying music, & his work has since then been mostly behind the scenes, collaborating with many worthwhile artists like T.I, M.I.A & Rihanna. He has also been associated with acts like Caspa, but such is the vibe around the electronic dance genre that his innovations have been played to packed clubs. Even though actively working as DJ & records executive since 2006, Rusko only landed his high-flying debut album in 2010. Rusko tickets are now the subject of great attention following the artist’s recent much publicized collaboration with Britney Spears.
Dubstep is an innovation in electronic music, originating in Southeast London. The genre was extensively played at the nightclub "Forward", which has been instrumental in its growth. Dubstep is a darker variation of 2-step garage music. Taking its cue from the reggae beats while incorporating the funky breakbeat elements, dubstep is overdosed with drum & bass on a 2-step garage rhythm. Sequencers, turntables, synthesizers & samplers are the major instruments used. Rusko has emerged as the artist who has taken dubstep to the recording studio & made it more than just a 140 bpm freakish variant. Born as Christopher Mercer in Leeds in 1985, Rusko studied Music Production in the Leeds College of Music. Dubstep was soon his biggest inspiration with his work in the events "Sub Dub" & "DMZ". He soon brought in his signature upbeat pop-friendly feel to the dark genre with "SNES Dub", his first single in 2006 on Dub Police Records. Rusko moved to London to work with record labels Stingray & Sub Soldiers.
He linked up with West London music producer Caspa to land FabricLive.37, a dubstep album which won many accolades for the fledgling genre. Within the next three years, Rusko released a number of singles, some of which did wonders for the dubstep scene in UK nightclubs. Rusko collaborated with British-Tamil hip hop recording artist M.I.A on her third album Maya, & also chipped in with Rihanna, T.I & Switch. Rusko finally brought out his long-awaited debut OMG on Mad Decent Records in May 2010, which was universally acclaimed for its brash & experimental feel, a new angle to the genre.
Rusko has morphed from a talented aspiring dubstepper into a leading ambassador for the genre. Starting off with 2006’s "SNES Dub", Rusko released a number of singles over the years which have kept his reputation afloat. "Babylon Vol. I" & "Cockney Thug" have gained widespread recognition. The album FabricLive.37 used samples from acclaimed Hollywood films Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory & Snatch. A metallic heavily undulating bass-line glides through each of his debut album OMG’s songs, allowing creative freedom for the collaborating artists. "Hold On" featuring Dirty Projectors’ Amber Coffman is a gem, while "Woo Boost" is a grinding bass piece. Gucci Mane uses hip hop in "Got Da Groove", while reggae elements are in force in the melodic "Rubadub Shakedown" featuring Rob Azlan. The album has done well & has further boosted Rusko’s reputation as a flexible artist. Collaborating with Britney & T.I, two artists on different ends of the musical spectrum, is proof enough of his progress as a musician.
This upsurge in popularity has seen the dedicated Leeds native establish legions of clubbing fans across UK. His pieces use loops from popular media, including films, & his ability to innovate within the dark confines of the genre has meant Rusko tickets are at the top of every electronic music fan’s list. Rusko performs in Belfast, London & Newcastle in the next week.
Rusko’s development as a musician parallels the development of dubstep as a bankable genre. It is remarkable that the electronic music world is talking in hushed tones of an artist being a top innovator when he’s only an album into his career. Such is Rusko’s spellbinding artistry, something that fans with Rusko tickets are used to.
