Music has always been a passion for Rufus. He started playing the piano at the age of six and was on tour bus at thirteen with a folk group, "The McGarrigle Sisters and Family". He performed his single "I'm a-Runnin'" for the movie Tommy Tricker and the Stamp Traveller when he was fourteen. He even earned a nomination for the same at the Genie Awards in 1989 in the category of ‘Best Original Song’. He also received a nomination at the Juno Awards in 1990 for ‘Most Promising Male Vocalist of the Year’. Rufus Wainwright has recorded seven original music albums and a number of singles as soundtracks, compilations and for films. He is also known for his writing and has penned a classical opera setting the sonnets of Shakespeare to music for a piece of theatre by Robert Wilson. Most of Rufus’s music retains his characteristic narrative sense. His first album brought him critical success, with Rolling Stone Magazine naming him the ‘Best New Artist’.
Rufus Wainwright started working on his debut album titled Rufus Wainwright in collaboration with the producer, Jon Brion. The record was released in 1998. Wainwright recorded fifty six singles in total, on sixty two tape rolls. This album gained critical acclaim and Rolling Stone Magazine saw it as one of the year’s best albums, also calling the vocalist "Best New Artist" of the year. The album received a Juno Award for ‘Best Alternative Album’ and a GLAAD Media Award in the category of ‘Outstanding Music Album’.
In 1996, Rufus Wainwright launched a tour to UK as Kate and Anna McGarrigle’s "Special Guest". In 1998, he headlined a tour with Sean Lennon and also made appearance in a Gap commercial. His tour to UK proved to be successful and later in 1999, Rufus went to perform in New Jersey. Poses was his sophomore attempt in 2001, in which Wainwright expanded on the styles and themes of its predecessor. Rufus showed interest in opera during the years of his adolescence and the genre holds a strong musical influence for him. The album was critically acclaimed and made it to the Billboard 200 and was at number one spot on the Top Heatseekers chart. Rufus toured with Ben Folds, Sting, Guster and Tori Amos during 2001-2004.
In 2003, Rufus came up with Want One, a full-length album spawning the numbers Waiting for a Want. A DVD named ‘All I Want’ was internationally released in 2005 featuring music videos, live performances and biographical documentary of Rufus Wainwright. Rufus also sang about his family and he described his experiences with his father, mother and sisters in tracks like "Beauty Mark", "Dinner at Eight", "Martha" and Little Sister". Wainwright has made appearances in movies like "Heights" and "The Aviator." Rufus continued touring throughout 2007 and attracted many fans, with Rufus Wainwright tickets always selling out.
