The first concert presented by RCO was witnessed in Concertgebouw with Willem Kes as the principal conductor. Kes served from 1888 to 1895 till Willem Mengelberg took over. Mengelberg however dedicated fifty years of his life to the orchestra. During his utterly successful tenure Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra rose to international acclaim. Edward van Beinum joined the orchestra in 1945 as the second conductor paying attention to the symphonies of Anton Bruckner and making commercial recordings for Philips Records. Bernard Haitink then served from 1961 to 1988 carrying on Beinum’s mission and paving way for an increased number of recordings for EMI, Philips Records and Columbia Records. On the other hand, Riccardo Chailly’s strength lied in Bruckner, Braham and Mahler’s symphonies. While promoting modern music he focused on works by Shostakovich, Igor Stravinsky, Edgard Varese, Olivier Messiaen and Paul Hindemith.
