Music was the only option
Born in Vernon, Texas, Roy Kelton Orbison grew up during the era of the Great Depression where both of his parents were unemployed. His family later moved to Fort Worth in search of work in 1942. During his time there, he started to develop a liking for country music and was soon gifted a guitar by his father. He then started to listen to stars like, Lefty Frizzell, Jimmie Rodgers and Hank Williams who became his musical inspirations too.
Orbison started to consider making a career in the music industry when he heard that his schoolmate, Pat Boone has secured a record deal. He then joined Wink Westerners and started to perform with the group on local television. While he was enrolled at North Texas State College, Orbison heard the song, OobyDooby which was composed by Dick Penner and Wade Moore. He then made a few changes to the track and released it in 1956. It caught the attention of the owner of Sun Records, Sam Phillips who invited him and his band, The Teen kings to record the song in his studio. It became an instant hit, selling more than two hundred thousand copies and reaching fifty ninth spot on the Billboard Hot 100.
Signing with Monument Records
The Teen Kings later started to incorporate the rockabilly sound in their music and came out with tracks like, Rockhouse and Go! Go! Go! The band later however disbanded but Orbison stayed in Memphis and dropped his debut studio album, ‘Roy Orbison at the Rock House’ which couldn’t make much of an impact.
Frustrated by the lack of success, he decided to leave Sun Records and signed with Monument Records shortly afterwards who issued his sophomore studio effort, ‘Lonely and Blue.’ It broke into the UK Albums chart, landing at the fourteenth spot and received 3.5/5 stars from AllMusic. The album also contained three singles out of which, Only the Lonely and Blue Angel became Top 10 hits in the United States.
Roy Orbison put out three more studio efforts via Monument Records, ‘Crying,’ ‘In Dreams’ and ‘Orbisongs’ all of which found success across the U.S and charted on the Billboard 200. Crying is the record that made him a star. It also featured a single by the same name which was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
He then signed a record deal with MGM Records and went on to record several albums including, ‘The Classic Roy Orbison,’ ‘Milestones’ and ‘Memphis’ but none of those brought him the desired level of success.
Forming the Traveling Wilburys
In 1988, Roy Orbison formed a supergroup with his friends, Jeff Lyne, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan and George Harrison called the Traveling Wilburys. He recorded and released the first album with the band entitled, ‘Travelling Wilburys Vol. 1’ which hit the shelves on October 18, 1988. It turned out to be very popular in the United States, reaching third spot on the Billboard 200 and earning a Grammy Award nomination in the category of, ‘Album of the Year.’ It was also certified triple platinum by the RIAA.
A couple of months after the release of the record, Roy Orbison passed away. His last recorded album, ‘Mystery Girl’ came out a year later which sold more than a million copies in the U.S. and peaked at the number one spot in different European countries. After that, two posthumous albums were released to the public, ‘King of Hearts’ and ‘One of the Lonely Ones’ in 1992 and 2015 respectively.
