Learn more about Ronnie DeVoe’s music
Ronnie DeVoe is the former member of the 80’s hit boy band called ‘New Edition.’ He was introduced to the pop group in 1980 by his uncle, Brooke Payne, who also happened to be the group’s choreographer. Before joining New Edition, Ronnie was part of a group known as ‘The Dramatics’.
In 1981, after emerging as runners up in a contest, New Edition got a record deal from the Streetwise record label. They released four albums back to back and took the music industry by storm. New Direction was one of the best selling hip-hop/R&B bands in the 80s.
Bell Biv DeVoe and Subsequent Years
After the album ‘Heart Break,’ members of New Edition split up. This is when Bell Biv DeVoe was formed and Ronnie became a part of it. Since the band members had decided to branch out and go solo, producers Terry Lewis and Jimmy Jam suggested that Michael Bivins, Ricky Bell and Ronnie make their own hip-hop band.
Bell Biv DeVoe’s debut album called ‘Poison’ was a record breaking success; it sold more copies than any of their last band’s albums. Some of the hit songs from the album included ‘When Will I See Your Smile Again’ and ‘Poison.’
It has been more than 40 years since New Edition came to the scene with hits like ‘Can You Stand The Rain’ and ‘Candy Girl.’ Even today, New Edition’s influence can be felt in the R&B/hip-hop genre. It won’t be wrong to say that they took the music industry in another direction.
