The first ever Rock in Rio event took place in 1985 at the dreamy Rock City which had an area of about 250 thousand square meters and was purposely built for this grand festival. The entrepreneur Roberta Medina was the producer and organizer of the event and pulled in big names like Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Queen and Ozzy Osborne. These bands performed alongside 28 other international and national singers and bands and this marked the beginning of Brazil’s greatest music festival.
The second rendition of Rock in Rio was held at the Maracanã Stadium in Rio De Janeiro and in one of the concerts by Norwegian band, A-HA a huge crowd of 198000 people was recorded which secured a Guinness World Record for most people paying for a concert. Now with over 30 years of history and 12 marvelous editions held over the years, this event has spawned shows in Spain and Portugal also, with the hope of bringing together people and fulfilling the varied appetite for musical tastes for all sorts of audiences.
This year’s line-up has something for every kind of musical fan. From pop and R&B legends like Justin Timberlake, Beyonce to alternative musicians like The Nocturals, Grace Potters as well as the hard rocking sounds from veteran rock ensembles like Metallica, Iron Maiden and Bon Jovi.
Apart from all the extravagant live performances there are plenty of activities to look out for at the Rock in Rio. These include the exciting Street Dance Contest which attracts the top dancers from Madrid, Lisbon and Brazil who face-off on the dance floor in a tri-country competition and fight for a prize of $45,200. This contest promises to put the whole City Of Rock to dance.
Another famous attraction of this festival is the musical which features a playful story of a boy and a girl. The boy who’s a mute expresses his feeling in music whereas the girl, the world’s biggest music festival organizer’s daughter doesn’t likes listening to music. This number features more than 50 exhilarating pieces from different Rock in Rio editions. Other than this there would be Celtic music, British rock, Irish tap dancing, juggling, magicians, bagpipers, caricaturists, burlesques and more than 60 artists scheduled for performances in a single day.
This festival has continued to grow bigger over the years; in 2010 the Rock in Rio concert tickets sold out in just four days. The audiences were overwhelmed by a great line-up of artists like Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Guns N’ Roses and pop greats such as Shakira, Katy Perry and Rihanna. The expectations of people were once again fulfilled at last year’s festival where more than 350000 music fans participated in Lisbon. A party flair was added to the celebrations by names like Linkin Park, Bruce Springsteen and Smashing Pumpkins.
This year the festival returns to its beloved home ground in Rio. The acts would be taking place at three stages of the City of Rock. The first main stage is the world stage followed by the sunset stage and lastly the electronic stage. There would also be a separate area allotted for the "Rock Street", which would be created in style of the Irish Grafton Street, English Pubs and London’s Camden with plenty of kiosks and drinks bars.
