English rock singer and songwriter Robert Anthony Plant was born on August 20, 1948. Born and bred in the West midlands, he had his early education from the King Edward VI grammar school for boys in Stourbridge. His innate talent of musical abilities was discovered at a very early age, when he took keen interest in rock ‘n roll music while he was a child. In his adolescence, he developed a strong association with blues, and his early songs depict an influence by artists like Robert Johnson and Willie Dixon.
Coming from a well educated family and being son of a civil engineer, Robert Plant initially pursued higher education and training in chartered accountancy, but soon recognized his lack of aptitude for the profession and left it for a career in music. In his pursuit of good music education, he earned his living by doing jobs in different companies in the region. There was a time when he even had to work for the famous British construction company, Wimpey and his job included laying tarmac on the roads. In this time of financial hardships when he was moving from band to band, singing with a variety of groups, he could not earn much money but did manage to get himself known among the musical community as a new and promising talent. He also met the drummer John Bonham in those days.
His success story started in 1968 when he was picked up by Jimmy Page, the guitarist who was looking for a lead singer for his new band, ‘The New Yardbirds’. At that time Plant was singing for a small band named Hobbstweedle. Robert Plant took this opportunity as a means to express his capabilities in front of new audiences, and took the drummer John Bonham along. John Paul Jones joined them later, and soon they were renamed as the ‘Led Zeppelin’. This new band released its self titled debut album in 1969 that was a hit, although being considered having a strong influence by heavy metal. Around the mid 70’s, Plant had some tragic incidents in his private life, including his injuries in a car accident, and death of his son by a stomach infection. These incidents inspired him to write lyrics for his songs as well. Owing to these inspirations, his lyrics often depict thoughts from philosophy, spirituality and Norse and Welsh mythology. His hit songs including, The Rain Song, Immigrant Song and Bron-Y-aur Stomp depict these influences. His keen interest in spirituality and mythology also urged him to travel across the continents, including Africa and Asia. In the classic track Kashmir and album No Quarter: Jimmy Page and Robert Plant Unledded, and Dreamland, the same influence expresses at its best. Similarly, the hit track, Stairway to Heaven topped the charts and was rated as the greatest song of all times in many polls.
Robert Plant is especially known for his live performances, as he is known for his lyrical improvisation which is something that can only be experienced by being at his shows. His stage presence is made more pleasant by his good sense of humor and light heartedness, and a special talent of vocal mimicking of Jimmy Page’s guitar effects. Some hit songs expressing this special feature include, Nobody’s fault but mine, Sick again, The Lemon Song, How many more times, Dazed and Confused and You shook me.
After the death of Plant’s long time friend John Bonham in 1980, ‘Led Zeppelin’ was disbanded and he pursued a solo career. Pictures at Eleven (1982), The Principle of moments (1983), Shaken and Stirred (1985) and Fate of Nations (1993) are some of his solo hit albums. He joined some bands later including, ‘Priory of Brion’ and ‘The Strange Sensation’ but no association lasted long. He joined Band of Joy in 2010 and released his new studio album, Band of Joy in September 2010.
Robert Plant’s work has been acknowledged internationally at the highest of levels, and the list of awards he received includes Grammy’s Album of the Year Award in 2009 for his album Raising Sand. He is renowned for his passion for blues-rock and heavy metal, and for all the lovers of this genre of music, Robert Plant Tickets are perceived as an opportunity to witness the maestro at his best.
