At a very young age Cray had various music influences, particularly from his father’s collection. It involved rhythm, blues, jazz, gospel and traditional music genres. Another factor shaping up Cray’s interest in music was his childhood as an "Army Brat". He kept moving from place to place and this constant uprooting made him an introvert who found solace mainly in music. He worked with dedication and made it to his high school band in Newport News, Virginia. But since his family had to move again to Washington, he could not continue with the band.
Having seen stars like Freddie King, Muddy Waters and Albert Collins, Cray had decided early on to pursue career in music and to form his own band. Cray became so interested in blues at one point in time that he went on to convince his classmates to invite Albert Collins for their graduation party. This association with Collins however went a long way in Cray’s career.
In 1969, Cray collaborated with a local musician Richard Cousins and started playing in Tacoma bars. Together they were able to make their own music and it led them to move out of their comfort zone and explore new avenues of music. Cray left for Eugene, Oregon and formed his own band there with Cousins and the new member Tom Murphy as the drummer. Cray himself stayed as the front man on guitars and the vocals. Association with Collins proved fruitful here when he invited Cray and his band "Robert Cray Band" to play along on his Pacific Northwest Tour. This tour marked the first milestone in the long journey of fame and stardom for Robert Cray. From then on the star has been on an unstoppable journey, and now you have a chance to see him live.
Robert Cray also released his albums in the meantime. His first album Who’s Been Talking, got caught up in fortuitous events and was lost in oblivion. "Bad influence" (1983) and "False Accusations" (1985) were moderately successful, but "Strong Persuader" (1986) went on to break all records. It became platinum and also landed Cray a Grammy Award. This first major breakthrough by Cray involved a fine blend of jazz and blues with Rock ‘n Roll. The intricacy of music astonished fans and critics alike and established Cray as an original creator of music, who stays true to the blue genre without resorting to its traditional form. "Don’t be Afraid of the Dark" (1988) kept the popularity high; it went gold and earned Cray another Grammy as well.
Robert Cray did another successful experiment with his 1990 album, "Midnight Stroll". This album involved funky music beats along with the renowned Memphis Horns by Wayne Jackson and Andrew Love. This album received a very warm response from critics as well as fans. He continued experimenting throughout the nineties and most of his work was loved by the fans and critically acclaimed for being original and impressive. Cray also became a record producer in late nineties when he broke away from Mercury to form his independent label Rykodisc.
In 1999, Cray released "Take your Shoes Off" under his own label, which not only got him another Grammy but also marked the 25th Anniversary for the Robert Cray Band, which now consisted of Cray and Cousins along with Jim Pugh on the keyboard and Les Falconer as the drummer.
Almost four decades in the music arenas and the incredible performer still refuses to slow down. His latest album "Nothin’ but Love" was released in August 2102, which has been voted as the Album of the Year by The Guitarist Magazine. The artist is expected to feature songs from this album in his upcoming concerts as well. Another attraction available to the fans is the availability of tickets at reduced prices.
