Rob Base and the late DJ E-Z Rock was one of the best rap duos in the late 80’s who rose to fame when they released their smash hit single, It Takes Two which went platinum in the United States. Their music made people fall in love with them and they reached new heights consistently.
The era of Sureshot Seven
Robert Ginyard and B. Rodney Bryce also known by their stage names, Rob Base and E-Z Rock are New York natives who shared a common passion for music from the very beginning. The duo became part of the group, Sureshot Seven when they were in fifth grade. They used to perform together but by the time of high school graduation, all members of the band left, except for two talented individuals who later joined forces to become Rob Base and E-Z Rock.
The duo began to record on its own and released the first single, DJ Interview which was produced by the late E-Z Rock and Chill Will. The track featured on World to World’s Fast Money Compilation in 1986 and it led to them getting signed by Profile Records in 1987. That was the break they were looking for and they made the most of it. They two of them reached new heights of success and cemented their place among the hottest artists of the late 80’s. Climbing to new heights
After signing with Profile Records, Rob Base and E-Z Rock started working on their debut album, ‘It Takes Two’ and released the title track in 1988. The single was met with great critical reviews and enjoyed immense commercial success. It made them an overnight sensation as the track reach Top 40 in the United States and charted at the third spot on the US Billboard Hot Dance Club Play. The track, It Take Two was called the Single of the Year by Spin and was included in VH1’s list of the ‘100 Greatest Songs of Hip-Hop.’
They soon put out their album, ‘It Takes Two’ which went platinum in the United States and reached the thirty first and fourth spot on the Billboard 200 and Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. It produced four singles in total including, Get on the Dance Floor which charted at the first position on the Hot Dance Club Dance. The record also received favorable reviews from the critics as AllMusic gave it four and a half stars out of five.
The Incredible Base and Break of Dawn
After the success of their debut record, the duo returned with the second album, ‘The Incredible Base’ in 1989. It reached fifty eighth and twentieth spots on the Billboard 200 and Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums respectively and was certified gold by the RIAA. The album featured ten songs but it did not connect with the listeners and so it didn’t receive much success. It was a different story on the critical front as AllMusic gave it three stars out of five. It featured a single titled, Turn it Out (Go Base) which charted on the twenty third position on the Hot Dance Club Songs.
By the end of the year, E-Z Rock and Rob Base due parted ways but the duo got back together to release its third and last studio album, ‘Break of Dawn’ in 1994. It was released by Funky Base Records and featured fifteen tracks. The record was met with mixed reviews as AllMusic gave it two stars out of five whereas it got three stars from AllMusic.
