The Riot Fest has been a part of the annual music calendar for just under a decade but even in such a short span of time it has gone on to rank among the most anticipated events of the year. The Riot Fest is the brainchild of Mike Petryshyn. He had always been a music fan especially punk and rock. He was a normal guy with a normal job. Everything was going fine when one day he got bored of his routine. That is when he decided he was going to put on a festival where he will bring together for a very special event. That is how the Riot Fest we see today came to the fore.

The first edition was held in the year 2005.  It began as an experiment to give fans a chance to see some of their favorite bands in action live. The city selected for the festival was none other than Chicago. All the hard work put in by the team paid off brilliantly and the event turned out to be an enormous hit.

The Riot Fest just carried on from there. With every year that passed by its popularity soared and more and more people made their way to watch the biggest names in rock and punk perform live. For the first seven or so years the festival rotated between the best arenas in Chicago. Metro, Double Door, the Congress Theater and Cobra Lounge among others were used to provide the stage for the artists to perform. Groups like Danzig, Weezer, Fun, Alkaline Trio, Dead Milkmen, Suicide Machines, Social Distortion, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones and The Lawrence Arms among a host of others have all made their presence felt to make the festival what it is today.

Another unique aspect of the Riot Fest is that it has been known to offers fans the chance to see reunions of iconic bands. Members of groups like Screeching Weasel, Articles of Faith, Chiodos, WAX, Blue Meanies, Jesus and Mary Chain, Naked Raygun and Plow United have all teamed up to perform together again.

The stature of the event continued to grow apace and then in 2012 it was decided it had outgrown indoor arenas. A decision was taken to move it outdoors and the venue selected was the famous Humboldt Park. It is a magnificent venue that contains sprawling gardens and also features old lagoons. Add the the fabulous Chicago skyline to the equation and it becomes an picture perfect setting for one of the biggest festivals in the country today.

The re-location to Humboldt Park enabled the management to enhance the entire experience. Various aspects of carnivals like games, rides, vendors offering food, wrestling and other things were added to the mix to turn the whole event into an opportunity to have a great time out for Riot Fest tickets buying fans.

More cities like Dallas, Toronto and Brooklyn have also been added for the Riot Fest to go to. The main port of call however still remains Chicago.
