Rick Nelson learnt how to play the clarinet and drums in his teens and also the guitar .His first appearance on their family show The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet a radio sitcom was with his brother David on Feb 1949; in the episode Invitation to Dinner. In 1952 this program made a successful transition to the television screen, and ran successfully till 1966.

In1957, Ricky became popularly known from the episode Ricky the Drummer from the television program The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet when Ricky lip synchronized I’m Walkin, which led  to his teen craze At the age of sixteen  Ricky  signed  to a Jazz record label  Verve Records .In 1957 he recorded singles like A Teenager’s Romance and I’m Walkin . The song I’m Walkin reached number four on Billboard Chart of Best Sellers in Stores while the song A Teenager’s Romance hit number two.

Nelson’s first album Ricky was released in October 1957 hitting a record number one by the end of the year. His first Imperial single Be-Bop Baby reached number three on the Charts. This was after he resigned from Verve Records and joined Imperial Records.  In the summer, the same year Ricky formed his own band after he realized he could not pull along with older Jazz artists. In 1958  Nelson released his second album Ricky Nelson. In this album Nelson recorded Sharon Sheeley’s Poor Little Fool. It became number one single on the Billboard’s Hot 100 singles chart.

In 1960 Nelson moved to country music and became a pioneer in the country-rock genre. It took him a period of ten years to reach the top 40 when he recorded Bob Dylan’s song She Belongs to Me, with the Stone Canyon Band.
