Ricky Gervais - The Musician

Ricky Gervais started off as a musician. While he was still at University College London (UCL), he formed a band Seona Dancing with his college friend. A new wave pop band, Seona Dancing signed a record deal with London Records. Despite releasing two singles, the duo failed to make a mark. One of their singles More to Lose however made it big in the Philippines. Gervais has also worked as the manager for Suede, an alternative rock band.

After his musical career didn’t take off, Gervais took to radio. He worked as an assistant events manager for the University of London Union (ULU). He later took up a job at Xfm, an alternative radio station. He became a regular contributor to Mary Ann Hobbs’ Radio 1 show. However, the radio station was bought by the Capital Radio group and Gervais’s had to leave.

Ricky Gervais was noticed on television in 1988, when Channel 4’s Comedy Lab first aired. His mainstream success came with The 11 O’Clock Show in 1999. His character became infamous for spewing expletives and politically incorrect statements. In 2001, Gervais co-wrote his own comedy show on Channel 4 called Meet Ricky Gervais. The show bombed and since then Gervais has himself made fun of the show.

In 2001, The Office, a British mockumentary sitcom, was first aired on British television. A six-episode series, it failed to make any major impact initially. However, the television network took the time between its first and second season to promote The Office. The strategy worked and the series won the prestigious Golden Globes. Life’s Too Short began airing on BBC Two in 2011. Gervais described it as a cross between Extras and The Office. In the US, it was aired on HBO in 2012.

In 2007, Guinness World Record listed The Ricky Gervais Show for most downloads. Gervais appeared on these podcasts alongside Stephen Merchant and Karl Pilkington. These podcasts would later go into making of The Ricky Gervais Show. The show made its debut in the US as an animated TV show. It aired on HBO in February 2010. The Ricky Gervais Show was a huge success in the US and continued for three seasons.

When he is not working, Gervais is advocating for gay rights and raising money for a variety of charities. He is a staunch atheist and humanist, who is a patron of the British Humanist Association. He is also a big fan of David Bowie and Lou Reed.
