Born in February of 1966, Rick Astley was the fourth child of his parents. They got divorced when Rick was five and so he was raised by his father. His interest and career in music began when he started performing as part of a church choir. During his days at the school, Astley played as a drummer in a number of local bands. This is how he got acquainted with guitarist David Morris. After finishing school, Astley worked as a driver during day time while at night he performed as a drummer for various bands in the Northern club circuit.
‘Never Gonna Give You Up’
Rick Astley’s first single was ‘When you Gonna,’ a collaboration with Lisa Carter. However it was with the song ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ that the singer gained attention. The track was recorded on New Year’s Day in 1987 and released after eight months. It was an instant hit and Astley’s distinct rich voice was highly praised.
‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ spent five weeks on the top spot of the British charts and was the highest selling song of the year. It topped the music charts in numerous other countries. Among these include Australia and Germany. ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ won Rick a BPI Award (now the Brit Awards) in the category of ‘Best British Single.’ Since then there has been no looking back for the multi-talented music artist who has treated his fans to a plethora of hits over the years.
‘Whenever You Need Somebody’
Rick Astley released his debut music record ‘Whenever You Need Somebody’ in November, 1987. The album sold over 15 million copies around the world. It was the seventh bestselling record of the year in the UK. Apart from the mega hit ‘Never Gonna Give You Up,’ it comprised songs such as ‘It Would Take a Strong Strong Man,’ ‘When I fall in Love’ and the title track.
Shift in Music Genre
In 1990 Rick Astley decided to move away from dance-pop and began exploring soul, which he was immensely passionate about. This shift of music genre also had him alter his image from a boy next door to a mature musician. His third music record ‘Free’ came out in 1991 and reached the top ten in the UK and Top 40 in the US. It comprised the ballad ‘Cry For Help’ which was a Top 10 hit both in the UK and the US.
Retirement and Comeback
Following the success of the music album ‘Body and Soul’ in 1993, Rick Astley decided to retire from his music career at only 27 years of age. For most part of the 1990s and early 2000s, he remained out of the limelight. The music contribution that he made during this time span was ‘Mission Statement,’ a song he co-wrote for the 1999 album ‘Raingods with Zippos’ by vocalist Fish.
Almost a decade after the release of ‘Body and Soul,’ Ashley made his comeback in the industry with the album ‘Keep It Turned On’ in 2001. This was followed by Rick’s first compilation album ‘Greatest Hits’ in the year 2002. This album went on to sell more than 100,000 copies. 2004 saw Astley on tour for the first time in fourteen years. This led him to a contract with Sony BMG.
