Jim Heath, the Dallas-born psychobilly singer, performs solo and as part of a trio, both under the name Reverend Horton Heat. The group was formed in 1985 and played some of its earlier gigs in the Deep Ellum neighborhood of Dallas. The current members of the trio are Jim Heath on the lead vocals and guitars, Scott Churilla on drums and Jimbo Wallace on the upright bass. Currently, the group is signed on to Victory Records. The Music of Reverend Horton Heat

Over the years, the punk rock psychobilly band has released eleven albums. Their first album, Smoke ‘Em If You Got ‘Em was released in November 1990 under the label, Sub Pop. This was followed by the Full-Custom Gospel Sounds of Reverend Horton Heat in 1993, Liquor in the Front in 1994 and It’s Martini Time in 1996. The trio by now had switched to Interscope Records. They released Space Heater in March 1998 and then switched to another label called Time Bomb Recordings. Lucky 7 was released in 2002, followed by Revival in 2004, We Three Kings in 2005, Laughin’ & Cryin’ with the Reverend Horton Heat in 2009 and REV in 2014. 

In addition to these studio albums, the trio has also released three collections, and multiple singles such as “Big Little Baby”, “400 Bucks/Caliente”, “One Time For Me”, “It Was A Very Good Year” and “King”. Reverend Horton Heat also has several music videos, soundtracks and compilations to its name.

Band Members

Reverend Horton Heat has had a large number of people become a part of the group and depart, over the years since its formation. Former members include the likes of Jack Barton, on upright bass, Bobby Baranowski on the drums and Kyle Thomas on the drums as well. Patrick “Taz” Bentley was a part of the group from 1989 till 1994. Paul Simmon, who joined Reverend Horton Heat in 2006 as a drummer, left in 2012. And Scott Churilla, who is the current drummer of the group initially, joined the group in 1994 and left in 2006. After this, he rejoined in 2013 and is currently a part of the official lineup.

Other personnel involved with the band include Tim Alexander on the piano since 1996, Bobby Dunavin on the guitar and as the tour manager since 2014, Sean Bailey as the tour manager and now the merchandise seller, Scott Weiss as the manager from 1992 till present, Charlie Reid as the manager and booking agent and David Livingstone as the manager and booking agent as well.

The psychobilly group has been a forerunner in their genre of music. Jim Heath as also been referred to as the “godfather of modern rockabilly and psychobilly” by one reviewer. The band has described itself as “country-fed punkability” creating music that is loud and energetic with lyrics that are often quite humorous.
