Relient K – The Beginning
Spiritually inclined, alternative rock, pop punk band from Ohio rose in the 2000s. Their formation however dates back to the late 90s, when high school friends Matthew Thiessen, Matt Hoope and Brian Pittman decided to perform together and called themselves, Relient K. Named after Hoope’s Plymouth Reliant K, the trio recorded a demo in 1998 and it earned them a deal with Gotee Records. With Dave Douglas as the drummer, the band released their debut self-titled album in 2000 and it announced their arrival in the music industry. Soon after the band hit the road on their first tour and it has remained their pattern since then. Performing live on an average 150 to 200 dates a year, touring has played an important role in building Relient K’s strong fanbase and record sales.
“The Anatomy of the Tongue in Cheek” followed in 2001 and it showcased the band’s maturity, both musically and lyrically. Featuring an eclectic mix of fast punk tracks like “Kick-Off” and “Pressing On”, it also includes soulful number such as “Down in Flames” and the pop rock worship single, “Those Words are Not Enough”. The album not just increased their fan following but also diversified it, as people of different age groups and backgrounds tuned into their radio hits.
Keeping Things Fresh With Two Different Albums in 2003
Stretching their boundaries, Relient K released their 3rd album “Two Lefts Don’t Make a Right...but Three Do” in 2003 and the very same year, came out with their first Christmas record called “Deck the Halls, Bruise Your Hand”. While one was punk-powered, explosive rock n roll, the other was a blend of classic holiday tunes, given Relient K’s unique treatment.
Frontmen Matthew Thiessen and Matt Hoope have managed to keep their music alive and ingenious in all these years by trying out different styles. Even though they are primarily a Christian band, Relient K has received great reviews as a mainstream act as well. The duo is not afraid to mix things up, blending sounds and even collaborating with diverse artists to keep their music interesting and fresh.
Relient K Back With “Air for Free” – A Pure Pop Album
After three years gap the band released their 8th album “Air for Free” and the critics have called it a “satisfying return to form”. Having a cheerful, pop-rock feel to it, the songs from the start to finish are about positivity, love and peace. A lot of acoustic instrumentation has been thrown in for good measure. Thiessen and Hoope have even used horns and ukulele on the song “Sleepin`”.
Standing out as the strongest tracks on the album, “Empty House” and “Local Construction” are beautifully penned and aesthetically composed. Relient K shows maturity with “Man”, a bouncy pop number that packs quite a punch with its unexpected dynamics. The tracks “God”, ‘Cat” and “Marigold” successfully bring out the playful spirit of the band, they very same thing that made them famous initially.
Watch them live this season as they bring their fall tour to your city. Switchfoot will also be performing their Grammy winning tracks, so make sure you’re there among the raving crowd.
