Catching the attention of the world
Two guys from Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico, Jesús Alberto Navarro Rosas and Julio Ramírez Eguía created Reik in 2003. The duo went straight to work and started recording demos. Two of those demos, Ahora Sin Ti and Levemente became instant club hits. Judging by how popular these two songs were getting, they decided to add a third member, Gilberto Marín Espinoza to the band’s line-up. They signed a recording deal with Sony Music and hit the studio to work on their first studio effort with producers, Kiko Cibrian and Abelardo Vázquez.
In 2005, Reik released their debut self-titled LP. It turned out to be a masterpiece that had Latin music fans talking about them. The album yielded three chart-topping singles, Yo Quisiera, Noviembre Sin Ti and Qué Vida La Mía. Moreover, it was certified platinum in Mexico. ‘Reik’ also became a hit in the United States and achieved platinum level sales in the country. The band then decided to embark on a brief U.S tour which helped them promote their music to the American audience. In the same year, Reik was nominated for their first Latin Grammy Award for the ‘Best New Artist.’
On the road to stardom
After the success of their first self-titled studio effort, Reik did not waste any time in releasing their second studio album, ‘Secuencia.’ It hit the shelves on December 12, 2006 and peaked at the thirty first spot on the Top Latin Albums. Produced by, Kiko Cibrián, the LP gave six singles.
After a gap of two years, Reik dropped their third studio album, ‘Un Día Más.’ It received massive airplay in both, Latin America and the United States. Moreover, it received such a great response from fans of Latin pop music that it won a Latin Grammy Award in the category of the ‘Best Pop Album by a Duo/Group with Vocals.’
Making their mark
Reik didn’t slow down and took their popularity to new heights when they spawned, ‘Peligro’ in 2011. It landed at the second spot on the Latin Pop Albums chart. The album showed a different side of the band with a more aggressive, electronic and experimental sound. It also caught the attention of the critics as AllMusic gave it three stars out of five.
Following the release of, ‘Peligro,’ they took five years off and in 2016, they churned out their fifth studio LP, ‘Des/Amor.’ This album marked their territory in the United States as Billboard included it in its list of the, ‘Best Albums of 2016.’ Moreover, the record was also nominated for a Latin Grammy Award in the category of the ‘Best Contemporary Pop Vocal Album.’
