Ray Lamontagne is an American singer/songwriter who was born in New Hampshire as Raymond Charles Ray LaMontagne. The 37 year old extremely talented singer focuses on the folk, folk rock and folk blues music. His father was a musician but had left the family when Ray was very young. He had not thought of being involved in any kind of music activity, instead he started working in a shoe factory after graduating. His inspiration to step into the music world was nothing but a single song which woke him up one fine morning; it was Stephen Stills’ song ‘Treetop Flyer’.
 
Having a born talent of singing, Ray Lamontagne started singing along with his side job of tutor. Gradually he started to perform at the local venues and grabbed the attention of the listeners. Mike Miclon, the owner of a theatre heard him singing and invited him to open for folk acts- that was his first step into the music industry. His started his career as a solo artist but later he realized the need of co-singers who could assist him in singing as well as performing. The four musicians, Greg Leisz, Eric Heywood, Jennifer Condos and Jay Bellerose are the members of the band called Ray Lamontagne And The Pariah Dogs. The first two play the guitar where as the other two are on bass and drums respectively.


Ray Lamontagne released his successful debut album ‘Trouble’ in 2004, which was distributed by RCA Records and Echo Records. The album was ranked at #5 in UK and its title song listed among the top 25 singles. RCA Records released the next album ‘Till The Sun Turns Black’ in 2006 in USA and 2007 in the UK. It was positioned at #28 on the US charts. The third album, titled as ‘Gossip in the Grain’ came into picture as a massive hit which peaked at # 3 in 2008. The latest release ‘God Willin’ and the Creek Don’t Rise’ also debuted at # 3 in the US in 2010.  


Ray Lamontagne is known as a soft spoken person, having a raspy voice which he learned himself. He got inspiration from artists including Stephen Stills, Rick Danko and Richard Manuel. Having a shy nature, he avoids talking much to the public, even through TV. He also prefers singing in the dark as he describes himself as ‘a private person’. He is usually compared to Van Morrison, The Band, Tim Buckley and Nick Drake by the critics. The talented singer has done social work as well by performing at various charity events like ‘From the big apple to the big easy’ and ‘Warren Haynes Christmas jam’.
