Born on the 28th of November 1943, Randal Stuart Newman is one of the most well known musicians in the music industry of the United States. He is not only an amazing singer but also a brillian pianist, arranger and composer. He is known for his scathing film soundtracks. Newman was born in Los Angeles, California in a Jewish family. His music is reminiscent of great blues artists such as Sonny Boy Williamson and rock and roll musicians in New Orleans such as Chris Kenner .
Among the scores he has composed include hits such as Ragtime and Best. He has composed a number of soundtracks for different films as well such as Disney – Pixar moviles including The Princess and Toad, Cars, Monsters Inc., A Bug’s Life miniature, Toy Story, Toy Story 2 and many more as well. He also composed the score and the songs for the movie James and the Giant Peach which was released in the year 1996.
Randy Newman began writing songs at the age of seventeen, when he signed a contract with the company called Reprise Records . He was a member of the band called The Tikis for a short while. Later, the band became Harpers Bizarre, known by the version they did for the song called Feelin Groovy in the year 1967. As part of this group, Newman offered some of his compositions such as "Simon Smith and the amazing dancing bear" and "Happyland".
The debut album of the band was also named Randy Newman and was released in the year 1968. The record managed to get into the Billboard Top 200. The album featured many artists such as Peggy Lee, Pat Boone, Dusty Springfield, The Everly Brothers, Judy Collins and Alan. In 1970 , Harry Nilsson recorded an album of Newman compositions called Nilsson Sings Newman . The album was a success, and paved the way for Newman's next record, 12 songs in which he abandoned the elaborate arrangements of his first album for a basic sound that would show off his piano skills.
12 Songs was hailed with criticism and the themes of his songs (racism, sexism, violence and other problems of society) did not have great commercial. The following year, his live album Randy Newman was the first to appear in the Billboard at number 191. In 1972 , he released his album Sail Away , which peaked at number 163 on the Billboard chart. This album featured songs like Sail Away, Burn On, You can Leave your Hat On.
In later years, Newman released albums like Good Old Boys , which reached number thirty-six on Billboard and was in the Top 200 for twenty-one weeks. Newman's work as a film composer began in the year 1971, when he composed the music for the Norman Lear film called Cold Turkey. He returned to work for cinema in 1981 when he composed music for the film Ragtime, which was nominated for two Academy Awards .
Newman was nominated again for an Oscar for his song You've Got a Friend in Me from the movie Toy Story which was released in 1995. He received an award for Best Song at the Oscars in 2002 for the play "If I did not have you" from the movie Monsters Inc. . In 2011, he won his second Oscar for Best Song with "We Belong Together" which was the theme song of Toy Story 3.
