Ramin Karimloo is a singer and actor of Iranian descent, who has gained prominence for his work at the West End in London, where he has performed major roles in two of the longest-performed musicals, playing Jean Valjean, Enjolras and Marius in Les Miserables, and acting as the Phantom for Phantom of the Opera. Furthermore, he shaped the character of the Phantom in an Andrew Lloyd Weber musical Love Never Dies, which is a sequel to The Phantom of the Opera. Karimloo has won several awards as Best Actor, including a nomination for a Laurence Olivier Award in 2011. The artist composes his own music in his band called Sheytoons alongside Hadley Fraser. From Peterborough in Canada, Ramin Karimloo relocated to Richmond Hill, where he studied at Alexander Mackenzie High School. He started his career as a musician by performing in rock bands while also working in several theatre projects until he found work at theatre companies such as P&O Cruises and Airtours. He then moved to England, where he played Aladdin’s pantomime in Chatham, performing in the title role. In 2001, he became a part of The Pirate of Penzance on its national tour of UK, for which he first understudied the character and then played the character of Pirate King. The following year he played Artie Green in yet another national tour of popular musical Sunset Boulevard. His West End debut came with his perfromanc e in Les Miserables in which he took the role of Feuilly while also understudying the characters of Enjolras and Marius.
In 2003, Ramin Karimloo was offered the lead role in The Phantom of the Opera, in which played Raoul. The final performance was recorded for the DVD feature of behind-the-scenes, in the musical’s version by Joel Schumacher. In this film he also played a cameo role of Gustave Daae, who is Christine’s father, someone she believes to have sent her the angel of Music. In the meantime, Karimloo also performed in two concerts; Jesus Christ Superstar in which he played the role of Simon Zealotes as well as a featured vocalist, and Les Miserables in which he performed as Marius. The following year, he returned to Les Miserables to play the character of Enjolras. Later in the same year Karimloo performed in the musical’s concert held at Windsor Castle in the presence of Jacques Chirac, the then French president. The same year he was invited to join Miss Saigon’s national tour in the UK, performing the role of Christopher Scott, and later appeared in Phantom of the Opera’s West End production, in which he played the leading role of the Phantom. The artist brought the character a new substance and aura that was noticed by the fans, and brought him a nomination from Theatregoer’s Choice Awards in the category of Best Actor for a Take Over Role.
Ramin Karimloo released an EP titled Within the Six Square Inch, in which he plays duets alongside Sophia Ragavelas and Hadley Fraser, whom he met during Les Miserables. In 2008, he recorded a track with Dianne Pilkington and Shona Lindsay called I Only Wish for You, to be added to a CD album containing twenty new songs by twenty-six West End performers titled Songs from the Musicals of Alexander S. Bermange, released in the November of 2008, through Dress Circle Records. By 2009, Karimloo was offered to perform for the Musical album of Bluebird, which is a WW2 musical with karimloo playing the role of Ben Breagan, a US serviceman. The artist performed alongside several other West End artists, and the album with twenty-four tracks was released across four countries.
On the twenty-fifth Anniversary of Phantom of the Opera, Ramin Karimloo sandg the title track at the famous Royal Variety Performance, held in Manchester at The Lowry. Performing with him were three previous Phantoms and Nicole Scherzinger. One of his tracks, recorded in the album called The Music Box, presents an interesting acoustic version of the Bluebird musical’s song.
