Background and Interest in Music
Born into a music-obsessed family in Baytown, Texas, RaeLynn developed an early association with music. Her family members often sung at the local church and her brother Jake Holtz was part of the Grammy nominated band called Leeland. Miranda Lambert’s “Me and Charlie Talking”, sparked her interest in music at the age of 11 and the young RaeLynn began writing songs and playing the guitar. Despite her extra-curricular interests, RaeLynn was an exceptional student and topped the class when she graduated in 2011. Initially, RaeLynn believed she would do great as an actress and even auditioned for various theatre shows, wanting to play the ‘country girl’. However the young girl was soon to realize that her future lay in music and not acting and began writing songs with her friends.
The Voice and Recognition
The aspiring singer wrote and sang songs in anonymity until she landed into the momentous reality TV singing show The Voice aired on NBC. RaeLynn had auditioned for the show on a friend’s advice and the decision proved to be a crucial point in her largely unnoticed music career. Her auditioning performance was an amazing cover of “Hell on Heels” originally sung by Miranda Lambert and this immediately struck the judges, two of which wanted her on their team. RaeLynn’s phenomenal performances on the reality show stunned everyone and she sang some of the most impressive song covers of artists like Jason Aldean, Pistol Annies, Tom Petty and Maroon 5. Although the artist got eliminated from the show in the quarterfinals, it proved to be her ticket to fame.
